It is respectfully recommended that Fire Department Report 3-88
be received for information.
BACKGROUND AND COMMENT
The Ontario Fire Code requires the occupant load in assembly occupancies to be
posted, to be based on the provisions of the Ontario Building Code.
The Fire Code states - "the number of people permitted in assembly occupancies
shall not exceed the occupant load as posted in conformance with Article
2.7.1.5".
2.7.1.5 states - when the occupant load, as determined by the Building Code and
limited by units of exit width available, is more than 60 persons, the occupant
load shall be posted in a conspicuous location near the main entrance.
Recent correspondence received from the Office of the Fire Marshal has advised
that Fire Departments use the new standardized form for posting occupant loads,
as provided through their office.
In the near future, this Department will be visiting all assembly occupancy
properties, determining the applicable occupant loads and providing a completed
Occupant Load Card, to be posted by the property owner or their agent.

If a facility is used only for one purpose, then one occupant load can be deter-
mined. If however, a facility has a number of uses, then the occupant loads
under the various activities will be established.
