Even though the tender amount from Class Glass is substantially lower than the other bidders, the variance can be substantiated by the fact that they are not subcontracting work as are the other general contractors. As a small window manufacturer they are also able to supply and install glazed units at a much lower rate. One item which appeared much lower in value than the other bidders was for painting of the interior frames and windows. Class Glass had apparently only allowed for touch up painting and indicated that about $500.00 extra would be needed for complete painting of the frames and windows. With this figure they are still well below all other bidders. I have also contacted Mr. John Fitzsimmons at the Durham Board of Education who has had very successful dealings with Class Glass and indicated they are a very knowledgeable and dependable company. In conclusion therefore, I recommend that the Municipality of Clarington retain Class Glass to carry out the restoration of the windows at the Bowmanville Museum. Additional fees should be negotiated with regard to the interior painting if this work is to be carried out.
