(416)263-2231 REPORT TO THE GENERAL PURPOSE AND ADMINISTRATION COMMITTEE MEETING OF MARCH 22 1982 REPORT NO. : PD-37-82 SUBJECT: REQUEST FOR SPECIAL RESOLUTION OF COUNCIL AS PROVIDED IN SIGN BY-LAW 76-25 TO PERMIT THE USE OF THE COLOURS RED AND AMBER WITHIN 150 FEET OF AN INTERSECTION FILE: 8.1 .9(b) I RECOMMENDATION: It is respectfully recommended that the General Purpose and Administration Committee recommend to Council the following: 1 . That Report PD-37-82 be received; and 2. That an exemption be granted from Section 4(3) (b) of Sign By-law 76-25, as amended, as requested by Mr. Lange. I BACKGROUND: Langes Photo Lab. Inc. is presently located at 14-A Division Street, Bowmanville, just south of King Street. The business is being relocated at 50 King Street East, Bowmanville, the north-west corner of King & Division I Streets. J!` Report No. : PD-37-82 , . ,/2 On February 24, 1982, Mr. Lange applied for a permit to erect a sign at the new location. The proposed sign displays a Kodak logo using the colours red and amber and is to be located within 150 feet of an intersection. i Section 4(3) (b) of Sign By-law 76-25 provides that: I "No illuminated sign which uses the colours red, green or amber shall be located within 150 feet of a traffic control signal nor within 150 feet of an intersection of 2 or more streets, except by special Resolution of Council . This provision shall not apply to signs located more than 25 feet from any street line. " I Mr. Lange has verbally requested a special Resolution of Council as provided in the By-law. i COMMENTS The proposed sign is an illuminated wall sign 22-1 2 inches 9 / s by 14 feet 16 inches and is to be mounted across the face of the building. The message area indicates the owners name I "Lange Photo Lab" in black letters on a white background and at one end is the 14 in. x 21 in. Kodak logo using the colours red and amber. There are no traffic lights at this intersection and it is unlikely any confusion would occur with the red and amber on the sign and the red and amber of any traffic lights erected in the future. It therefore appears appropriate for Council to pass the resolution as requested. Resp Ctfu].ay-submitted. T. Edwards, M.C.I .0'. Director of Planning HW/TTE/mjc i
