(416)263.2231 REPORT TO THE PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT COMMI:T'1'LE, MEETING OF June IL, 1.979, REPORT NO, : P-84--79 SUBJECT: Ministry of Natural Resources - Mapping Assistance ISACQROUND: During the preparation of various hamlet and urban area plans it became evident that the quality and accuracy of existing prase mapping was unsatisfactory for our purposes. In November 1978, the Region made available metric topographic maps for the Newcastle Village area, which provided an up--to-date base for the preparation of that Urban Area Plan, However. , similar mapping for other areas of the Town is not presently available and funds for undertaking such a project were not included within the Department 's budget. In April of this year, Mr. Edwards of this Department had dis- cussions with staff of the Ministry of Natural Resources regarding their current mapping programs . At that time, we were advised of the availability or grants for municipal. mapping projects and of the Wintry' m own program for undertaking metric topographical mapping for rhv Durham Area. I I f _ z _ Cor : The Ministry has indicated that their program should be ini- ated this year and that the resultant maps will be at a scale of 1.1.0000 and will be available at a reasonable cost O the municipality. It is our opinion that these maps will be of sufficient detail to meet our pre- sent needs; however, to ensure that the areas of specific interest to the Town are dealt with at an early stage of the project, it is necessary to formally request same of the Surveyor General for the Ministry of Natural Resources. . CONCLUSION: Inasmuch as a no id presently exists for accurate base mapping, it is suggested that the 'Town take advantage of the subject mapping program and request that the Ministry of Natural Resources give a high priority to mapping the Bowmanvil.le and Courtice areas, in light of the present preparation of Urban Area Plans for these areas. RECQMII ENDATIONS : That the Planning and Development Committed recommend to Council the following: 1. That this report be received; and that 2• The Planning b Department be authorized on behalf of the Town to request the Surveyor General for the Ministry of Natural Resources to assign a high priority to the mapping of the Bowmanville and Courticu urban areas of the Town of Newcastle, as part of their current metric mapping program for the Durhmn area; and that j 3 - 3. S W f be request6d to further investigate the comparative costs of obLAnIng mappipg through tho eubject program. Respectfully submitted, TTE:1b D. N. Smith, M.C.I.P.
