SUB,ECT: 1986 INTERNATIONAL TRADE FAIR
CLEVELAND , OHIO
OCTOBER 22 TO 29, 1986
RECOMMENDATIONS:
It is respectfully recommended to Council the following:
1. THAT Report PD-232-86 be received; and
2. THAT the Mayor or his designate be authorized to attend the 1986 International
Trade Fair to a maximum of three (3) days and that a budget allocation of
approximately Two Thousand Dollars ($2,000.00) be approved from Account
7710-0299-X-7 (Tourism and Industrial Development).
BACKGROUND AND COMMENTS:
As a result of a recent request by the Region of Durham Economic Development Department,
the Town has been made aware of an International Trade Show being held in Cleveland, Ohio
during the week of October 22, 1986 to October 29, 1986 inclusive. The Regional Economic
Development Department has advised that they will be setting up a booth at the Trade Show
which, last year, had more than 400,000 visitors. Regional Economic Development
Department Staff have requested the participation of area municipalities in this
exhibition and feel that it would be beneficial to each area municipality to participate
and/or send a representative to the Trade Fair to assist in the promotion of the Region of
Durham and our own municipality.

Following discussions with Regional Staff and the Mayor, Staff are
recommending that a representative of the Town, be it the Mayor or his
designate, attend the 1986 International Trade Fair for at least three (3)
days and that an appropriate budget allocation to cover travel and
accommodation expenses be approved up to a maximum of Two Thousand Dollars
($2,000.00) although Staff anticipate that actual costs could be
significantly lower.
In order to ensure that accommodation is available, Staff have reserved a
single room at the Trade Show Hotel . However, dependent upon Council 's
decision, it may be possible to make use of shared accommodation with
Regional Economic Development Staff.
Whether or not the Town participates, in order to comply with the Region 's
request, we will be forwarding, with Regional Staff, the Town 's promotional
material for distribution at the Trade Fair. We note that the Region has
requested each area municipality to provide a 3 ' x 6' Town Flag with flag
stand and base for display at the Regional booth. Unfortunately, we will be
unable to comply with this request and would suggest that some consideration
again, be given to design and production of a municipal flag.

Re: 1986 International Trade Fair -
Cleveland, Ohio - October 22-29, 1986
Our office has booked display space at the above-noted trade
fair. The attached pages will give you some idea of the scope
of this exhibition; one which the U.S . government is hoping
will become the North American equivalent of the renowned
Hanover Trade Fair in Germany. Informattion received from the
Canadian Consulate in Cleveland as well as show organizers
indicate that this event •will be an excellent venue at whi.ch
to promote the virtues of Durham Region as a site for
development.
My purpose for writing is to issue an invitation for the Town
of Newcastle to supply us with any brochures as well as
promotional materials ( ie. pens, plastic bags, matches,
buttons, etc . ) which will be distributed to as many as
possible of the anticipated 500,000 visitors and 800
exhibitors .

In an effort to attract attention to our display and
illustrate the nature of the Region, we would also like to
display the flag of each member municipality. To this end we
would be greatly appreciative if you could supply us with one
of your municipal flags ( size 3 ' x 6 ' ) , complete with
flagstaff and base . We would require all brochures,
promotional materials and flags at our offices by 4:00 p.m. ,
Friday, October 17 , 1986 .

I realize we have not given you much notice for these
requests . However, we have only just become aware of the show
ourselves and are trying very quickly to put together a
display which will not only gain attention but also convey the
diversity and attributes of the Region. We hope you will take
advantage of this opportunity to promote your municipality to
thousands of business people from around the world, and at the
same time, assist us in making more people aware of Durham
Region.
