RECOMMENDATIONS:
It is respectfully recommended that the General Purpose and Administration
Committee recommend to Council the following:
1. THAT Report PD-273-88 be received; and
2. THAT the request to gain relief from current Town Policy with respect to
two (2) street names in Plan of Subdivision 18T-87033, Schickedanz Phase
II, be approved; and
3. THAT the applicant be so advised.
1. BACKGROUND AND COMMENT:
1.1 On September 14, 1987 the Town of Newcastle Council resolved to approve
street names in new Plans of Subdivision after people historically
significant to the former Townships of Clarke and Darlington. In that
regard, if street names were chosen which were not in accordance with Town
Policy, they must be considered by Council prior to registration.

1.2 In October, 1988, Mr. Robert Schickedanz approached Planning Staff
with respect to two (2) street names which are not named after
historically significant people for the Schickedanz Phase II
subdivision located at the north/east corner of Liberty Street and
Concession Street. The first street name is "Apple Blossom Boulevard"
which would name a collector road through the subdivision. Inasmuch as
the street name is not about a historically significant person, the
apple blossom is the symbol of the Town of Newcastle and it would seem
to be appropriate to name a major collector as such.
The second, "Elephant Hill Drive", would name a street which is
situated in an area where a hill was locally known as Elephant Hill.
Staff would note that the other street names in the Plan of Subdivision
are in accordance with Town Policy.
2. CONCLUSION
Given the above, Staff is of the opinion that both "Apple Blossom
Boulevard" and "Elephant Hill Drive" are historically significant and
would respectfully recommend approval of same.
