SUBJECT: PROPOSED HERITAGE DESIGNATIONS - ONTARIO
HERITAGE ACT
FILE: PLN 19.1
RECOMMENDATIONS:
It is respectfully recommended that the General Purpose and Administration
Committee recommend to Council the following:
1. THAT Report PD-183-88 be received; and
2. THAT the request of the Town of Newcastle Local Architectural Conservation
Advisory Committee to designate as Historical Structures/Sites, those
properties listed on Attachment No. 1 hereto, be approved; and
3. THAT the Clerk prepare, send and publish the required notices of intent
pursuant to the provisions of the Ontario Heritage Act and report back to
Council following the prescribed notification period; and
4. THAT the Town of Newcastle Local Architectural Conservation Advisory
Committee be advised of Council's decision.
1. BACKGROUND:
1.1 On July 29, 1988, the Planning Department received copies of requests
submitted by the Local Architectural Conservation Advisory Commitee
(L.A.C.A.C.) to designate a total of four (4) properties as having historic

or acobitctoroI value or interest. In reviewing these requests, Staff /
note that the Ontario Heritage Act empowers a municipality to designate �
|
properties. As well, the provisions of the Town's official Plan |
further supports and identifies the importance of designating
structures and sites as having historical or architectural
significance.
l.% Staff have reviewed the four (4) properties listed on Attachment 0o. l
hereto as recommended for designation by L.A.C.J\.C. ' and have no
objections to having said properties designated as having historical or
architectural significance.

3. RECOMMENDATIONS:
2.1 it is recommended therefore that the Clerk prepare, send and publish
the required notices of intent pursuant to Section 29 of the Ontario
Heritage Act and cegVct back to Council following the prescribed
notification period.

1. The Abram Varnum House - "Stoneleigh"
1893 Concession Road 7, Darlington
Part of Lot 26, Concession 6, Darlington
The Driving Shed to the south of the main house
is also recommended for designation.
2. 58 Queen Street, Bowmanville
Part Lot 11, Block 4, Hanning Plan
The main part (south half) of the building is recommended
for designation.
3. The Daniel Hogarth House - 5415 Solina Road
Part Lot 24, Concession 5, Darlington
4. St. Saviour's Anglican Church
