RECOMMENDATIONS:
It is respectfully recommended that the General Purpose and Administration Committee
recommend to Council the following:

1. On May 29, 2001, Council approved recommendation #GPA-313-01, which placed, in
writing Clarington's informal policy of naming streets in memory and in honour of war
veterans, including war dead. This recommendation also specified that all existing and
future streets named in honour of war veterans be identified with street signs displaying
a poppy.
2. The purpose of this report is to update Council on the status of the use of war dead and
war veterans' names in Clarington street names.
3. War dead and war veterans' names, verified by the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch
178, Bowmanville and pre-approved as street names by Durham Region, are the names
usually used in the naming of new streets.
4. The status of the war dead and war veteran names, as of September 30, 2004, is as
follows:

5. In winter 2002, poppy symbols were added to the appropriate 59 existing street names.
Since then, 48 new streets have received ot been approved for poppy symbols. , This
includes some soon-to-be registered plans of subdivision.
