Subject: TOWN OF NEWCASTLE STREET NAME CHANGE
LITTLE COURT TO LITTLE AVENUE
HETHERINGTON COURT TO HETHERINGTON DRIVE
FORMER TOWN OF BOWMANVILLE
Recommendations:
It is respectfully recommended that the General Purpose and
Administration Committee recommend to Council the following:
1. THAT Report PD- 215-91 be received;
2 . THAT By-law 86-112, being a by-law to establish a Street Name
Map and Street Name Inventory in the Town of Newcastle be
amended to change the street names "Little Court" to "Little
Avenue" and "Hetherington Court" to "Hetherington Drive"
within the former Town of Bowmanville; and
3 . THAT Council authorize the Mayor and Clerk to execute a by-
law to amend By-law 86-112 being a by-law to establish the
Street Name Map and Street Name Inventory in the Town of
Newcastle.
1. BACKGROUND
1. 1 At their meeting held on July 29, 1991, Council endorsed the
following resolution. . . . .
"That Staff be directed to proceed to process an amendment to
By-law 86-112 (Street Name Inventory) in accordance with the
Municipal Act, by changing the following Street Names:
(a) Little Court to Little Avenue;
(b) Hetherington Court to Hetherington Drive; and
That Staff be directed to remove the street name signs from
Little Court and Hetherington Court and not to erect any
street name signs until such time as the amending by-law is
approved by Council to clarify the situation" .

2 . PUBLIC NOTICE AND SUBMISSION
2 . 1 Pursuant to the provisions of the Municipal Act, the proposed
name change was advertised for four (4) consecutive weeks
within the local papers .
2 .2 No written submissions have been received in respect of the
advertisements .
3 . STAFF COMMENTS
3 . 1 By-law 86-112, which was passed by Council on July 28, 1986,
established the names of all streets within the Town of
Newcastle.
3 .2 In consideration of the Street Name By-law, the Public Works
Department has undertaken to ensure that the street name signs
installed throughout the Town are consistent with the street
names as listed within the By-law. Accordingly, signs were
installed acknowledging the street names "Little Court" and
"Hetherington Court" .
3 . 3 Following the installation of the new street signs, several
concerns/objections were received from the local residents
requesting the streets be "re-signed" to "Little Avenue" and
"Hetherington Court" . Council subsequently endorsed a
resolution at their July 29 , 1991 meeting requesting Staff to
process an amendment to the Street Name By-law.
4 . CONCLUSION
4 . 1 In consideration of Council's request the attached by-law
amendment would implement the street name change of Little
Court to Little Avenue and Hetherington Court to Hetherington
Drive.

THE CORPORATION OF THE TOWN OF NEWCASTLE
BY-LAW NUMBER 91-
WHEREAS the Corporation of the Town of Newcastle deems it expedient
to amend the street name map and street name inventory for roads
in the Town of Newcastle.
AND WHEREAS such street name map and street name inventory
establishes an official name for all improved roads and those
unimproved roads which receive summer maintenance and are included
in the Roads Needs Study for the Town of Newcastle.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT enacted as a by-law for the Town of Newcastle
as follows:
1. Schedule "A" the street name map, and Schedule "B" the street
name inventory, be amended to:
a) change the name from "Little Court" to "Little Avenue"
and from "Hetherington Court" to "Hetherington Drive" in
the former Town of Bowmanville.
