REPORT NO® 5
OFFER RE SURPLUS SCHOOLS
The Northumberland and Newcastle Board of Education have
offered four surplus schools to the municipality to
purchase before putting there up for public auction. The
attached statements form an assessment of the suitability
of these building for municipal purposes.
If approved, this report should be forwarded to the
Community Services Committee and the Board of Education.
Respectfully submitted,
George F. Howden,
Planning Director.
BROWN'S SCHOOL
LOCATION: Situated about 1/8 mile north of Highway #2 on Golf
Course Road, Clarke.
DESCRIPTION: The Building is a 2 class room, 1 storey brick build-
ing, on about 2 ®3 acres of land. The Building is in
good condition, being about 10 ®15 years old. The
School Yard consists of a base ball back stop and a
flat grassed playing surface. The building could be
used as potential office space or a community centre.
It has a gravel parking lot with room for about 10 cars.
USE: The Building is presently being used as a community
centre by a group of local residents. It is being
offered to thom for sale at a price of $19,000. I
understand that a community centre operated by a
municipality is eligible for provincial assistance
for improvements which is not available to private
operators. If the community group now running this
centre are amenable to the proposal, the municipality
should consider purchasing the building for use as a
local community centre. The centre would continue to
be administered by a board composed of local residents.
RECOM EMATION: That the acquisition of this building be referred to
the Community Services Committee for their considera-
tion. It is important, however, that the municipality
avoid creating the impression that the local residents'
project is being taken away from them.
BURIMTON STATION SCHOOL
LOCATTON: Concession X, Lot 20, Darlington. Northern section
of town, N. West side of Old Scugog Road and local
side street.
DESCRIPTION: The Building is in good condition, built about 15
years ago of red brick, designed in a T -shape with
.flat roof. The school consists of 2 or 3 rooms but
is presently boarded up. There is approximately
3 acres of terraced land fringed by pine trees.
USE: School could be very easily renovated to provide
community services of just about any type but it
would seem that the present population is very small,
(about 158). The community is growing due to the
station on the C.P.R. line to Peterborough which is
used by commuters, but it is still probably too
small to justify purchase of a community centre of
this size.
RECOMMENDATION: No action be taken to acquire this building.
LAKESHORE SCHOOL
LOCATION: North side of Lakeshore Road, Lot 14, Concession
B /BF, Clarke.
DESCRIPTION: The Building, built before 1900, is of a 1 storey,
1 room style with a corregated metal roof. It is
situated on about 4 acre of flat land between 2
farms, The building has been replastered but at
one time was brick. General condition is poor with
large holes In the plaster surfaces and buckling
walls underneath. A frame shed has been built onto
the end of the main structure.
USE: The building is too isolated and dilapidated to be
of any use. The lot is too small to support a
residence and septic facilities.
RECOMMENDATION: The site should be conveyed to an abutting owner and
the building demolished.
PORT GRANBY SCHOOL
LOCATION: Concession A /BFy Lot 6, Clarke. North side of
Lakeshore Road west of tort Granby.
DESCRIPTION: The Building, built in 19099 is a 2 storey red
brick style with a Pull cement block style of base-
ment. The school is in good condition and is
located on a rather steep rolling property consist-
ing of about 1 -2 acres. There are a few farms
In the area but no concentration of population.
USE: The building itself is suitable for community
purposes, but is too isolated in location to be
convenient for such use.
RECOMMENDATION: No action be taken to acquire this building.
