JUNE 4, 1990 REPORT #: PD-197-90 FILE #: PLN 25 . 1.5 MECT: STREET NAME CHANGE - REGIONAL ROAD #9 TO CLARKE MUSEUM ROAD/REGIONAL ROAD #9 RECOMMENDATIONS: It is respectfully recommended that the General Purpose & Administration Committee recommend to Council the following: 1. THAT Report PD-197-90 be received; 2 . THAT the Region of Durham Planning Department be advised that the Town of Newcastle confirmed it's previous position of renaming Regional Road #9 to Clarke Museum Road/Regional Road #9 . BACKGROUND AND COMMENT: Background 1. 1 At a meeting held on March 28, 1990, Town Council endorsed the following resolution: "THAT the correspondence from Mark I . Jackman, Curator, Clarke Museum and Archives requesting that the signage "Regional Road #9 " be changed to "Clarke Museum Road/Regional Road #9" be received; THAT the request from the Clarke Township Museum and Archives be approved, and that the Regional Municipality of Durham be so advised. " . . ./2 REPORT PD-197-90 PAGE 2 1 .2 Regional Planning Staff Report No. 90-39 as endorsed by Regional Council approved the following: 1. THAT Regional Council agree in principle to the naming of Regional Road #9 as Clarke Museum Road/Regional Road #9 . 2 . THAT in accordance with the Municipal Act, notice of the proposed intent to pass an implementing by-law be published in Regional newspapers . 3 . THAT prior to passing the implementing by-law, the Planning Committee report to Council the results of the notice; and 4 . THAT a copy of Commissioner's Report #90-39 be forwarded to the Town of Newcastle. ? . Staff Comment 2 . 1 By correspondence dated May 11, 1990, Staff was advised by Regional Staff that pursuant to Regional Council resolution, the proposed name change was advertised pursuant to the requirements of the Municipal Act. 2 .2 Resulting from this process, Regional Staff were provided by correspondence from Mrs . L. Vanderzwet on behalf of the Oshawa Ski Club Board of Director, a letter of opposition to the name change. 2 . 3 To summarize, the Oshawa Ski Club indicated that it has been in existence for 54 years, having a membership of 5,200 members, and attracts an average 800 guests per weekend during skiing season. Their proposal would be the renaming of Regional Road #9 to "SKI HILL ROAD" . 2 .4 In light of the above, Regional Staff requested the Town's comment of this matter prior to reporting back to Regional Council. 3. Conclusions 3. 1 The purpose of this report is to provide Committee and Council the opportunity to re-confirm the previous resolution of March 28, 1990 .
