1. Call to order at 9:30 a.m. by the President
2. Minutes from the Feb. meeting amended as read:
Motion: K.Bastas Seconded: L.Forget CARRIED( No March meeting)
3. Business Arising from the Minutes: Members will be polled by email to ask
for the preference of business meeting times.(Morning, Evening or Either)
4. President's Report: The 3 signing officers will change for the term of the
Board to V.Lovekin, K.Bastas, T.Vanhaverbeke. Motion to approve 3 signing
officers: J.King Seconded: C.Peterson CARRIED
Motion to appoint Judith Clapperton as BIA Secretary upon her availability:
D.Miller Seconded: T.Vanhaverbeke CARRIED
Jane will transition Judith into the role over 2 meetings.
5. Treasurer's Report: Balance: $16,606.48
Bank charges have been resolved. Books are being audited.
Motion to accept Jackie Foxall's resignation as Treasurer, effective April 14,
2011 and appoint Theresa Vanhaverbeke as the new BIA Treasurer: G.Lewis
Seconded: C.Summers CARRIED
The BIA extends it gratitude for all the work Jackie has done.as Treasurer.
6. Committee Reports:
Safety & Decor: Theresa Vanhaverbeke presented potential developmental
plans for the property west of the CIBC. All those present agreed that the
integrity of the town be maintained with the structure and to beautify the
streetscape with more greenery. There will be a public meeting, May 91h at
the Municipality in Bowmanville to discuss this project. BIA will give their
support for commercial development.
Motion: G.Lewis Seconded:C.Peterson: Newcastle BIA send a letter to
David Crome, Director of Planning for the Town supporting the
development of commercial property in principal, subject to input and
design process. CARRIED
Advertising: The website designer, Donna Wood will be contacting present
businesses for information. Advertising will be available. BIA members are
listed free and the costs for ads are in progress. We will have a link on
Clarington Tourism: villageofnewcastle.ca It was suggested we use our
tagline "K/iore Than Our History" in our Mission Statement. More details
will follow at the next meeting.
Special Events: Easter Bunny Breakfast on Apr. 23rd needs more volunteers
to help with setup, serving, cleanup. Joyce King, Robert & Lorraine Forget,
Gerry Black, Snap Fitness, Cindy Summers have volunteered their time. Tiny
Norton's donated the coffee, Algoma donated cider and apples for the day.
July I" event needs sponsorship and big support to be successful. The main
event is the youth Ambassador Contest. State Farm will organize a Bike
Rodeo, Tim Horton's is sponsoring free swimming. Hot air balloon rides,
many activities and food will be available. There will be a BIA tent for
businesses to advertise through coupons or flyers. The day ends with
spectacular fireworks. Contact Karen Bastas if you can sponsor in any way.
Help is needed for the day as well.
Looping for a sponsor for the Santa Claus float in the parade.
Karen announced she is giving up Special Events and is looking for someone
to chair that committee.
7. CBOT: New Directors are in place.
8. Chamber News: Trade Show is Thursday, June 2"d'.
9. CIP: Meets quarterly. Grant money is available for 2012. Go to
www.clarington.net to apply. There is a Symposium Series planned for
interaction with communities and is open for all businesses to attend.
10.New Business: The Horticultural Society received the Trillium grant for the
Town Hall grounds.
Welcome to new businesses: Hearing Solutions, Growing Like Weeds,
Studio 57, Dee's Harvest Table.
11. The meeting adjourned at 11:00 a.m. Next meeting: May 12, 2011.
