HomeMy WebLinkAbout2008-05-13 Minutes BOARD OF MANAGEMENT BOWMANVILLE BUSINESS IMPROVEMENT AREA Minutes of a regular meeting of the Board of Management held at 6:30 p. m. on Tuesday, May 13, 2008, at the Village Inn. Present: Gilpin, (Linda) Hallet (Destinations to Go) Members: Lucas, Hooper, Turner, Seaton, Allin, Barry Absent: Patterson, Becz The Meeting was called to order by the Chairman, who then recognized that there were no delegations present. Moved by Hooper, seconded by Seaton, THAT the Minutes of the previous meeting be adopted as circulated. "CAIZRIED" The correspondence was received from the Municipality of Clarington, Durham Region Environmental Health Department, Star 93.3, and Edward Jones. Moved by Barry, seconded by Seaton, THAT the correspondence be received and filed. "CARRIED" Next the Treasurer presented his report a follows: Current Account $ 8,382.10 CFO Account 5,169.86 GIC 105 260.18 Total $118,812.14 Page 2 `. s f: Moved by Allin, seconded by Barry, THAT the Treasurer's Report be adopted as presented "CARRIED" DIRECTOR REPORTS: Council Liaison: Hooper reported that the Board's request for free parking for a week, each month, was denied by Council. Events: Allin reported that the Maple Festival and All That Jazz event was a success, as judged by the number of people in attendance. Membership Relations: Barry reported that one new business had located in the Downtown—Vacuum Plus Streetscape: No report. Communications: No report. Publications: Seaton reviewed the full-page advertisement which had appeared in the Toronto Daily Star, and noted that the next one will have a different photo of the Downtown. Gilpin requested that more space be given to the "Historic Downtown Bowmanville" banner at the top of the page. Board of Trade: Hooper asked if any Board member wished to sit on the Board of Trade. No one indicated an interest in doing so. Website: No report. Under "BUSINESS ARISING", Hooper reported that the only members from the Board who attended the information meeting regarding changes to the sign by-law were himself and Gilpin. Gilpin reported that members of the Board had met with Fred Horvath concerning matters related to the Downtown. Horvath reported that the broken bench had been fixed. Hooper noted that Horvath stated that the Municipality could not assume responsibility for watering the flowers in the A Page 3 Downtown, due to a lack of manpower. Turner was instructed to proceed with arranging for the flowers and to employ someone to water them. Gilpin reported that new Ministry of Health guidelines have been introduced which no longer exempt the Bowmanville BIA events, that these guidelines were enforced at the Maple Festival, and that Regional Councillor, Mary Novak, had been most helpful in co-ordinating on the Board's behalf, with the Durham Region Health Department. Next Gilpin raised the question of a replacement for Mark Hawkins on the Board of Management. Moved by Allin, seconded by Turner, THAT Karen Vella of"Gather" be asked to sit on the Board of Management as the member responsible for "Security/Telephone Alert". "CARRIED" Under "NEW BUSINESS", Turner is instructed to arrange for June Binington to begin her litter clean-up work on May 14. As requested by Horvath, Gilpin stated that he would call him regarding Binington's starting date. Horvath had agreed to ensuring that the Municipality's washer-flusher would be used in the Downtown before Binington begins her street maintenance. Hooper reported that four trees in the Downtown will be replaced and that the missing bollard at King and Silver Streets will be re-installed. Turner stated that she had attended an exchange of brochures meeting, where she learned that the Municipality's notice board is available to anyone to use to advertise public events. Gilpin reported that he had been in contact with Susan Benedet from "Life in Clarington" and that she has agreed to purchase $100 in Downtown Bank Notes to be used as a prize in an up-coming promotion. . x Page 4 Moved by Hooper, seconded by Seaton, THAT the Meeting be adjourned.
