HomeMy WebLinkAbout2007-05-08 Minutes BOARD OF MANAGEMENT BOWMANVILLE BUSINESS IMPROVEMENT AREA Minutes of a regular meeting of the Board of Management held at 6:30 p. m. on Tuesday, May 8, 2007 in Committee Room 1-C in the Bowmanville Library. Present: (Tony) Edwards Members: Hooper, Moffatt, Patterson, Lucas, Becz, Hawkins, Barry, Allin, Turner Absent: None The Meeting was called to order by the Chairman, who then recognized Edwards who was present on behalf of the Toronto Star. He stated that beginning in April 2006, local retailers have the opportunity to advertise in the Durham Region section of the newspaper at the rate of$1,132.00 for a half page. Further he said that he was now able to give the Bowmanville BIA that same rate, allowing it to reach 127,850 people on any Saturday in Durham Region. He went to suggest other options to reach additional areas. It was decided by the Board to refer this matter to the Events Committee. Moved by Hooper, seconded by Hawkins, THAT the Minutes of the previous meeting be adopted as circulated and amended. "CARRIED" The correspondence was received from Abernethy Paint and Wallpaper Ltd., David White, Municipality of Clarington, Classic Displays, OBIAA, Bank of Canada, Ontario Ministry of Tourism, and the James Publishing Company Limited. Page 2 Moved by Hooper, seconded by Hawkins, THAT the correspondence be received and filed. "CARRIED" Next the Treasurer presented his report a follows: Current Account $ 3,502.78 CFO Account 117,341.11 GIC 3,11 2.83 Total $123,956.72 Moved by Becz, seconded by Barry, THAT the Treasurer's Report be adopted as presented "CARRIED" DIRECTOR REPORTS: �,Fq Council Liaison: Hooper reported that the arrangements for the Home Depot at Highway#2 and Green Road have been finalized and are now proceeding. Events: Allin reported that the Maple Festival and All That Jazz event this year was fantastic, and that the plans for the Fabulous Fifties event are already under way. Membership Relations: Barry reported that there are two new businesses in the Downtown"Oh Dear Diapers" and Snippy Chicks". He also stated that Rickably's has been sold to Bethesda House. Streetscape: The Board appointed Rose Turner to this portfolio. Gilpin asked for direction in regards to the wording of the advertisement to hire someone to clean-up the litter in the Downtown from April to November on a casual basis at $11.00 per hour for 25 to 35 hours per week. The advertisement will be put in the Canadian Statesman. Communications: The Board appointed Barbara Patterson to this portfolio. " Page 3 Publications: The Board appointed Jan Moffatt to this portfolio. Board of Trade: Hawkins reported that Michael Kilpatrick was elected as the new Chairman of the Clarington Board of Trade. He then stated that three new doctors are coming to Bowmanville, thanks to the Board of Trade's efforts in this regard. He further stated that the location of the extension to Highway 407 will be announced in September. Website: Becz asked for the Board's permission to change the contact page on the Website to permit routing of many of the inquiries to alternative sites. Moved by Allin, seconded by Patterson THAT Becz be permitted to change the contact page on the Website to route those inquiries which are not related to the Downtown to other alternative sites. "CARRIED" �K Becz then stated that she is having one of her CBS Group people p p p telephone each of the Downtown business owners to seek up-dated information for their free page on the www.bowmanvi Ile.coin website. She requested that each business owner review the information currently listed so he/she is ready to report any changes he/she wish to be made. Under `BUSINESS ARISING", Gilpin reported that he had approved the coupon which will be included in the Municipality's bag for the $900 in Downtown Bowmanville shopping money. He noted that those identified at the April meeting as been potential candidates for appointment to the Board had agreed and were present. He further stated that the signing authority changes at the Royal Bank had been done as directed at the April meeting, and, that the pole banners have been installed by Eorsey Signs (after all). Various contacts by David White were discussed by those affected. The Board agreed to remain firm on its earlier decision. Under"NEW BUSINESS", Hooper raised the question of the Celebration of the 150's Anniversary of Bowmanville in 2008. It was generally agreed that Page 4 the Bowmanville BIA should play a role, but not as the initiator, and that it should be held early in September soon after the students return to.school. Moved by Turner, seconded by Barry, THAT the Meeting be adjourned. "CARRIED" The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, June 12, 2007, in Committee Room 1-C at 6:30 p. m. in the Bowmanville Library.
