1.2 During 1993 commercial, agricultural and institutional
construction have significant increases over 1992.
In Commercial construction, total value $5,109,000.00 there were
a number of projects valued between $200,000.00 and $378,000.00
in Highway #2 and Townline area and Bowmanville at Liberty and
Highway #401. The largest project in terms of construction value
was the $3,000,000.00 addition in progress at Bowmanville Mall.
Agricultural building had a 43% increase over the previous year
going from 3.5 million to 5.1. This figure does not include any
particularly large project but a considerable number of smaller
ones valued between $10,000.00 and $140,000.00.
The greatest increase of all construction for 1993 was in the
Institutional area, which jumped from $1,389,000.00 in 1992 to
$5,183,000.00. Additions and alterations undertaken by
Northumberland- Newcastle School Board made up the largest part of
this value. The most notable being the 3.8 million dollar
addition to Courtice North Public School. Trinity United Church
in Bowmanville also completed a $600,000 addition for use as an
auditorium.
1.3 In the Residential sector, permits issued for new dwelling units
declines from 841 in 1992 to 571 units in 1993. The most
significant decline occurs in Bowmanville where new units drops
from 547 in 1992 to 301 in 1993.
1.4 Although the total value of construction has declined in 1993, it
should be noted that there is a strong gain in the Commercial
sector. This, together with a weaker performance in the
Residential sector, represents a positive signal towards
achieving a better balance between Residential and Non -
Residential assessment.
