HomeMy WebLinkAboutCS-X 1981-03-31 to Council REPORT TO: Mayor G. B. Rickard and Members of Council FROM: Thomas A. Fanning, R. D. M. R. Director, Department of Community Services DATE: March 31, 1981 SUBJECT: Bowmanville Memorial Arena Extended Ice Time The closing date for the Bowmanville Memorial Arena is Monday, April 13th, 1981. At the present time the Bowmanville Eagles (Junior "C" Hockey Club) are in the Ontario Hockey Association Junior "C" Semi-Fianls, playing against Gravenhurst. I understand this is a best four (4) our of seven (7) series. If they win this series, they continue on to the final series between the winners of Woodstock and Essex. Does Council wish to make ice available to the Bowmanville Eagles past the April 13th closing date deadline? 4 If so, the following cost will be: (one week only) Hydro Per Week $625.00 Water for Flooding & Showers $ 75.00 Rink Attendants - 1 game per week (3) at $3.30 per hr. for 18 hours. $ 59.40 Operator (1 only) - 6 hrs. at $8.00 per hour 1 day - 6 to 11 p. m. $ 48.00 1 practice per week 1 operator - 2z hrs. at $8.00 per hour $ 20.00 $827.40 per week The operation of the canteen would cost as follows: 20 hours of wages at $3.30 per hour, per week would be $66.00 - for five (5) staff members. We also have 4 hrs. at $4.40 per hour for the canteen manager - total of $13.20, total $79.20 for one week. For four (4) weeks a total of $316.80. Report Bowmanville Memorial Arena Extended Ice Time Page 2. We predict that the canteen will gross $500.00 per game for four (4) games for a total of $2,000.00. Net revenue would be$800.00_ at -forty percent mark up. Actually the canteen pays for itself. An educated guess of Revenue for the period in question would be as follows : 1 practice - 2 hours at $40.00 per hour $80.00 for I week 1 game per week - 5 hours at $40.00 per hour $280.00 for 1 week Total revenue for four weeks $1120.00 providing they have a game and practice each week. There is a possibility that the series could go for four (4) weeks and the cost would be $3,309.60 plus $316.80 for canteen wages for a total of $3,626.40. This amount of money ($3,626.40) or whatever the cost may be is not in the 1981 Budget. It is difficult to come up with an accurate figure, however, I feel the cost stated in this report is an educated guess. If Council decides to have the Bowmanville Memorial Arena open while the hockey play downs are on, then I would recommend that the Arena be reimbursed by Council for the cost of operating. Staff have advised me that the demand for ice time at this time of year is practically none existent.
