THAT Report WD-88-89 be received for information; and 2 . THAT a copy of this report be forwarded to Dr. J. Baarbe, Chairman of the Newcastle Business Improvment Area REPORT 1. BACKGROUND 2 . 1 At a meeting held on March 28, 1989, Council passed the following resolution (#C-212-89 ) : "THAT the correspondence from Dr. J. Baarbe, Chairman Newcastle Business Improvment Area, pertaining to a request for a Crosswalk Sign at Beaver Street on King Street, Village of Newcastle, be referred to the Director of Public Works for preparation of a report for review by the General Purpose and Administration Committee. 3. REVIEW 3. 1 At the time that Dr. J. Baarbe wrote to Council about their concern of the safety of the children at the crosswalk at the intersection of Beaver Street and King Street East in the former Village of Newcastle, the Crossing Guard position for the intersection had been vacant from January to March, 1989 . 3.2 On April 10, 1989, the position of Crossing Guard for the intersection was filled and the crossing is now supervised during the school year. 3 .3 In addition to the above, the following improvements have been made: 1) A 'School Area' sign has been added to the 'Crossing Ahead' sign. 2 ) 'School Crossing' signs have been installed on King Street for east and westbound traffic . 3) Additional 50 km/hr. speed limit signs have been installed on King Street. . . .2 1038 REPORT NO. : WD-88-89 PAGE 3 4) Trees which were interfering with the 'Crossing Ahead' signs have been trimmed. 5) School crosswalk lines have been repainted at the crossing. 4 . RECOMMENDATIONS 4 . 1 It is, therefore, recommended that this report be received for information.
