RGIORT #: WD-36-89 FILE #:
SUBJECT:
PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT
1989 VACATION SHUTDOWN
RECOMMENDATIONS:
I
It is respectfully recommended that the General Purpose and
Administration Committee recommend to Council the following:
I
1. THAT Report WD-36-89 be received; and
2. THAT the 1989 Public Works Department, two week Vacation Shutdown be
scheduled from Monday, July 24, 1989 to August 7, 1989, inclusive; and
3. THAT minimum staff be retained to provide essential services in each
Division during the shutdown.
1.0 BACKGROUND AND REPORT
1.1 In 1981, in an effort to minimize the disruption in normal works
activities caused by vacation scheduling, the Public Works Department
initiated a two week vacation shutdown surrounding the August Civic
Holiday.

WD-36-89
This practice has been continued for the past few years enabling the
department to better schedule maintenance and construction activities
during the balance of the summer months. Due to the number of
Public Works employees with three or more weeks vacation, this two
week shutdown minimizes lost productivity due to vacation scheduling.
There are thirty-five (35) outside workers employed by the Town in the
Public Works Department with a total vacation allotment in excess of
six hundred days. By having a two week shutdown, the department has less
than three hundred days of vacation entitlement to schedule throughout
the remainder of the year.
Favourable acceptance of this report will result in the scheduling of the
vacation shutdown as outlined, with a minimum staff on hand to provide
essential services.
Respectfully submitted, Recommended for presentation
to the Committee,
Walter A. Evans, P. Eng., Lawrence o tseff,
i
Director of Public Works. chief Admin trative officer.
