MEETING: General Purpose and Administration Committee
DATE: Monday, April 3, 1989
REPORT #: PD-98-89 FILE #.'PLN 25.1
SUBJECT: STREET NAME: RESERVATION LIST
TOWN OF NEWCASTLE
THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION BRANCH 178
RECOMMENDATIONS:
It is respectfully recommended that the General Purpose and Administration
Committee recommend to Council the following:
1. THAT Report PD-98-89 be received for information; and
2. THAT the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 128 be provided a copy of the list of
names as reserved for the use by the Town of Newcastle.
1. BACKGROUND:
1.1 Council, at their meeting of January 16, 1989 endorsed the following
resolution:
"THAT the correspondence dated December 14, 1989 from Cecile Bowers,
Secretary, Branch 178 The Royal Canadian Legion, requesting that the Town
review the possibility of naming some streets, roads or areas after young
men who lost their lives fighting for our contry, be received and referred
to the Director of Planning for review and a subsequent report to the
General Purpose and Administration Committee."

2. STAFF COMMENTS:
PAGE 2
2.1 In consideration of the above resolution, Staff was provided with a
list of the names which the Royal Canadian Legion requested be
reviewed and considered for use in new subdivisions in the Town.
2.2 Since the Region has the responsibility to co-ordinate and approve
all street names in Durham Region to ensure there will be no
duplicating street names in neighbouring municipalities, Staff
forwarded the list to the Region for review and at the same time
requested the names be reserved for the Town of Newcastle.
2.3 A total of 132 names were submitted to the Region and 67 names were
rejected due to duplication. As a result 65 names were now placed on
Region's reserved street name list, and are available to be used by
the Town (copy attached).
2.4 The list of names approved by the Region is consistent with Town's
policy in naming streets after persons historically significant to the
Town.
Respectfully submitted, Recommended for presentation
to the Committee
