GEORGE STREET RECOMMENDATIONS: It is respectfully recommended that the General Purpose and Administration Committee recommend to Council the following: 1. THAT Report WD-27-90 be received; 2 . THAT a copy of this report be forwarded to Mr. George Brooks. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- REPORT 1.0 ATTACHMENT No. 1: Plan showing the new parking lot and bus loading zone presently being constructed at Vincent Massey Public School on Church Street 2.0 BACKGROUND 2 . 1 On October 2, 1989, at a meeting of the General Purpose and Administration Committee the following resolution (#GPA-718-809) was passed "THAT the request of Mr. George Brooks to rectify the traffic congestion generated by Vincent Massey School buses at the intersection of Church and St. George Streets be referred to the Director of Public Works for submission of a report to the General Purpose and Administration Committee. " 2 REPORT NO. : WD-27-90 PAGE 2 3.0 THE PROBLEM 3 . 1 At the present time there exists a concern with buses parking on Church Street to load and unload school children and occupying the driving surface. In addition, there exists on street staff and visitor parking for the school that adds confusion and congestion to the area. 4.0 REVIEW AND COMMENT 4 . 1 The Northumberland and Newcastle Board of Education has recently entered into a site plan agreement with the Town for the construction of an expansion to the Vincent Massey School and the construction of a parking lot including an on site bus loading zone. The new parking lot provides off street parking for school staff and visitors, a bus loading zone to accommodate the loading and unloading for all school buses . These works will greatly improve traffic flow on site and on Church Street. (see Attachment No. l) . 4 .2 At the present time The Board of Education has commenced the construction of the expansion to the Vincent Massey School and it is expected that the balance of the works will be completed by fall of 1990 . 5.0 CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS 5 . 1 From the above it can be concluded that the construction of the new parking lot and bus loading zone will eliminate the present traffic congestion on Church Street. 5 .2 It is, therefore, recommended that this report be received for information and that a copy of this report be forwarded to Mr. George Brooks.
