1990 VACATION SHUTDOWN

RECOMMENDATIONS:
i
It is respectfully recommended that the General Purpose and
Administration Committee recommend to Council the following:
1. THAT Report WD-30-90 be received;
2 . THAT the 1990 Public Works Department, two week Vacation Shutdown
be scheduled from Monday, July 23 to Friday, August 3, 1990,
inclusive; and
3 . THAT minimum staff be retained to provide essential services in
the Public Works Department.

REPORT
1.0 BACKGROUND

1. 1 In 1981, in an effort to minimize the disruption in normal works
activities caused by vacation scheduling, the Public Works
Department initiated a two week vacation shutdown surrounding the
August Civic Holiday.

1.2 This practice has been continued since 1981 and it has been found
that it helps in scheduling summer maintenance and construction
activities and makes it possible for employees to schedule a summer
vacation with their families.
2.0 RECOMMENDATION
2 . 1 THAT the 1990 Public Works Department Vacation Shutdown be
scheduled from July 23, 1990, to August 6, 1990, inclusive; and
2 .2 THAT minimum staff be retained to produce essential services in
each Division during the shutdown.
