Special Events:
Canada Day (Tuesday, July 1st, 12pm - 6pm, fireworks at dusk)
It has been a very difficult task, dealing with the municipality special
events team to organize our Canada Day event. It has been almost 2
months and we still have not received the permit. We had to fight for 20
picnic tables and 15 garbage pails of which we have to do our own
garbage and get our own garbage bin. We were initially told that we had
to have 5 paid police officers and 10 auxiliary MINIMUM in order to have
our event. We were told we needed five additional paid for the evening
portion of the event with the fireworks. The team completely changed our
plan and was recommending we use the dirt field on King for our parade.
We were told we couldn't use Mill St. And no stage on the road, less of a
beer garden, no car show, no inflatables on the street, stage inspections,
first aid tent clearly marked and the list goes on. We were declined the
community grant even though it is a new and innovative festival for
Newcastle with the cultural show we were going to put on. We now will
need to downsize and having to ask the BIA for extra monies.
The BIA will contribute up to $20,000.00 on a one time basis towards the
event with the understanding to scale back where possible.
