REPORT NO. : WD-26-83 ----------------­___1_____­------------------------------- --------- SUBJECT: PUBLIC WORKS JOINT HEALTH AND SAFETY COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATION: It is respectfully recommended: 1. That this report be received; and, 2. That the Public Works Joint Health and Safety Committee, formed in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, be recognized; and, 3. That all costs incurred by the Safety Committee be in accordance with approved Public Works Budget. BACKGROUND AND REPORT: In accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Section 8, and under the advice of Area Inspectors from the Ministry of Labour, the Public Works Department has formed a joint Health and Safety Committee, comprised of the Director of Public Works or his designate, one union staff member from each division, and a non-union supervision member. 2 - The committee members selected by their respective co-workers are: David T. Gray, Director' s Designate; William Harris, Division 1; Trevor Cooke, Division 2; Doug Gray, Division 3; and Fred Brown, Superintendent. It is the objective of the Works Department to comply with all Health and Safety Regulations and to ensure that all Works Department employees work in a safe and efficient environment. The committee will endeavour to develop a Safety Policy and consideration, the following: Management and Employee Responsibilities Accident Reporting and Review First Aid Requirements and Training Fire Protection and Training Good Housekeeping Tools and Equipment Protective Clothing Staff Training The committee will meet on a monthly basis to provide information and training sessions to staff, to review complaints and enquiries, to review accident reports and to make recommendations in respect to safety matters. It is assumed that all employees wish to work safely and assist in eliminating accidents as accidents cause suffering and inefficiency.
