RECYCLING OF PLASTICS
RECOMMENDATIONS:
It is respectfully recommended:
1. That this report be received; and,
2. That the Town of Newcastle support the Durham Recycling Centre special
pilot project for the collection of plastic bottles; and,
3. That Public Works Staff provide additional space at the Bowmanville
Public Works Yard, Liberty Street and Lake Road, for plastic recycling
bins; and,
4. That Durham Recycling be so advised.

REPORT:
The Society of the Plastics Industry of Canada in response to concerns over
the increased percentages of plastic being used for consumer packaging is
sponsoring a pilot project in conjunction with Durham Recycling Centre and
the Ontario Ministry of the Environment. The project is for two
months from April 28, 1986 to Jun8withDurham the Durham Region for the

It is, therefore, recommended that the Town of Newcastle support the project
and that Town of Newcastle residents be encouraged to utilize the plastic
recycling depots within the Durham Region.

YOU HAVE PROBABLY NOTICED that more and more of your household
products pre packaged in plastic' peanut butter, ketchup and pop to name
just a few. This is because they tend to protect better, are safer, more
convenient and lighter in weight. While there are many advantages to plastics
packaging, there are also many technical difficulties in recycling them. Because use
of plastics is growing and about four to seven percent try a eight) the r garbs problems

The Society of the Plastics Industry of Canada (SPI) is sponsoring a special
two-month pilot project beginning on April 28, 1986 to find out how to collect
and handle plastics collected from households. This test project will be the largest,
most comprehensive effort to date in Canada. Although recycled in,l rge vo�uu
industrially, plastics have rarely been part of household recycling programs

The main sponsor of this pilot program is The Society of the Plastics
Industry of Canada (SPI). It is a trade association of approximately 400 corporate
members, including the leading manufacturers and suppliers of plastic raw materials,
products, machinery and moulds.
The Ontario Ministry of Environment, under their Source Separation
Program, will be providing some of the necessary financial and technical assistance
to the operators of the four recycling centres to help them during the two-month
demonstration.
