That this report be received; and, 2. That under the responsibilities of the Public Works Joint Health and Safety Committee, a Safe Drivers Award Program be initiated; and, 3. That the Town of Newcastle obtain membership in the Ontario Safety League Safe Drivers Award Program; and, 4. Public breakdowns, reducing the level of service while increasing Works operators are professional drivers with special skills developed to provide a service to the traveling public. They are key personnel in the day to day operation of the Public Works Department. Upon favourable acceptance of this report, approximately thirty (30) Public Works staff members would be enrolled in the program. These staff members . are those that have assigned vehicles and drive or operate on as part of their job description. A clerk or technician who drives on occasion would not be eligible for enrolment would the program. The approximate cost to enroll in the program 30 members x $6.00 /member = $180.00. ....3 Page 3 Report No. WD -17 -86 Other municipalities presently enrolled in the Ontario Safety League Program such as the City of Oshawa, Oshawa P.U.C., and the Region of Durham, find membership for its professional drivers is worthwhile. It, is therefore, respectfully recommended that the Public Works Department enroll its professional drivers in the Ontario Safety League Program as recommended by the Joint Health and Safety Committee. ONTARIO SAFETY LEAGUE SAFE DRIVER AWARD PROGRAM The services offered through this Ontario Safety League program can form the basis of your own safety program or act as an extension of existing safety activities. The program is widely recognized as an effective means of attacking the traffic accident problem. It specifically provides an extra incentive for professional drivers to drive safely and avoid accidents. Present membership includes more than 300 firms employing over 15,000 drivers in Ontario. It is estimated that 75% of these drivers will drive accident -free and receive awards this year. Membership in the "Safe Driver Award" program provides you with these materials and services. 1. A membership card to each driver enrolled. 2. A copy of rules and regulations governing the League's Safe Driver award to each driver. 3. Progressive annual safety awards and certificates to accident-free drivers. 4. Monthly safety letter to each driver enrolled. These are short, to the point safety reminders in an informal friendly style. 5. A regular monthly bulletin of safety promotion ideas entitled "The Fleet Supervisor" designed for foremen, supervisors etc. 6. Colourful eye catching safety posters distributed regularly each month. 7. Consultation services with respect to fleet safety problems. 8. Members are given first preference in placing employees on the Fleet Maintenance, Fleet Supervisors and Driver Trainers courses conducted each year by the OSL. 9. i Information from our files on 30,000 professional drivers in Ontario. 10. Your drivers are eligible to attend the annual Safe Driver Award Banquet. The total cost is a minimum annual fee of $70.00 for fleets of up to and including nine drivers. For fleets with more than nine but less than 49, the rate is $6.00 for each driver annually. Fifty to ninety -nine drivers, the.rate is $5.75 each annually. In a fleet with over one hundred drivers the rate is $5.50 each driver annually. We will gladly provide additional information and /or application blanks upon receipt.
