Report No. WD -50 -86
The grade six class from Hampton Junior Public School as part of their
environmental studies program, responded to the invitation and were provided
a tour of the Bowmanville Water Treatment Plant by Region of Durham Staff.
Eddie Cook and his fellow grade eight class mates, as recommended in report
WD 37 -86, were invited along with the local press to attend the Facilities
in the Works Administration Office and given a tour of -the Hampton Works
Depot. Students were provided a quick overview of the Town Public Works
functions with specific emphasis on the High St. complaint and its program.
Following the tour, refreshments were provided during an informal question
and answer period.
On Friday Evening & Saturday, the Durham Region Public Works Association
hosted the Third Annual Snow Plow Competition and Rodeo. The Town of
Newcastle was well represented in this event, placing in the top of both
categories. Invitations were extended for the first time outside the Durham
Region to Victoria County and the City of Peterborough to participate in
this event. The attached schedule of Town standings is provided for
information.
Committee & Council may find it appropriate to forward a letter of
congratulations to the Town's participants. It should be noted that Team
number 16 from the Town of Newcastle and Team number 18 from Victoria County
were one man operated plows competing in a traditional 2 person operation.
In summary the response to Public Works Week has increased from the previous
year and it is felt that the student tours and participation in the Rodeo
are worth while activities in promoting Public Works awareness.
Respectfully submitted,
t
Gordon J. Ough, P. Eng.,
Director of Public Works.
