Report No. WD -68 -86
A petition has been received from the residents of Wellington Street
requesting that their driveways be resurfaced and advising of the need to
repair the sidewalk between the limits of Elgin Street and Temperance
Street. The request was referred to Public Works for review and report.
In accordance with Town Policy for Entranceways, property owners are
responsible for paving and maintaining the pavement on private driveways.
However, where accesses are affected by the reconstruction of the road or
sidewalk, the Town will reinstate, in kind, the area affected by the
construction. Presently, the existing driveways are gravel with asphalt
padding on the approach to the sidewalk. This section of sidwalk as stated
in the petition is distorted and in a deteriorating condition. The walk is
frequently used by the residents of Marnwood and could be considered
difficult for pedestrian travel. As well, the sidewalk is a major feeder to
the Central School and is deficient in width causing the boulevard area to
be worn and disturbed.
The sidewalk status report prepared in the summer of 1984 recommends spot
repairs and resurfacing. In view of the continuing deterioration of the
concrete and asphalt and the high volume use of this walk, it is recommended
that complete reconstruction of the sidewalk on Wellington Street between
Temperance Street and Elgin Street be initiated in 1986.
Respec ully subm' ted,
ordon J. Dug Eng.,
Director of Public Works.

Mayor and -7own of Newcastle Councillors:
We the undersigned citizens of Wellington Street would like the portion
of our driveways (Town of Newcastle property) resurfaced. The sidewalk
I
from Elgin Street to Temperance Street along Wellington Street is badly in
need of repair also. Miss Rundle from Marnwood Home and a friend of.hers
frequently use this sidewalk in their wheelchairs as well as several Senior
Citizens from this area. At present I am cutting weeds from the cracks in
the walk.
Hoping to hear from you in the near future,
Yours truly, `I
J. Keith Shackelton.
