WD -55 -86 FILE #:
SCHOOL ZONE SIGNS - NASH ROAD AT COURTICE WEST PUBLIC SCHOOL
RECOMMENDATIONS:
It is respectfully recommended:
That this reportAbe received for information.
REPORT:
At the Council Meeting of June 7, 1986, a letter from Mr. Larry Hannah,
Director of Municipal Services, Courtice and Area Community Association was
received regarding the posting of school zone signs and the lowering of the
speed limit on Nash Road in the Courtice Area. The issue of the placement
of school zone signs was subsequently referred to the Public Works
Department for review and report to G.P.A.C.

Report No. WD -55 -86
Staff reviewed the existing signing and found it to be in accordance with
M.T.C. guidelines. The specific locations mentioned in Mr. Hannah's letter
are not within the limits set out by M.T.C. guidelines and would, in staff's
opinion, not be appropriate.
Staff spoke to Mr. Hannah about his concerns with respect to installing
school zone signs and explained that the signs were, in fact, already in
place. Mr. Hannah explained that he and the area residents apparently were
not familiar with the school zone signs with symbols (see attached) and had
been thinking of the old signs with "school zone" written on the sign. Mr.
Hannah seemed satisfied with the situation after it was explained that the
speed limit was in the final stages of being lowered to 50 km per hour and
that the school zone signs in place were the recommended signs at the
recommended locations.
Respectfully submitted,
Gordon J. Ough, P. Eng.,
Director of Public Works.
