HomeMy WebLinkAbout2024-02-20Orono DBIA Meeting Minutes February 20, 2024 Moved to Terrens Wellness re an overbook at the Orono Town Hall Present: Karen Lowery, vice chair Heather Maitland, subst. secretary Frank Maitland, treasurer Manish Jagwani, Marissa & Brad Beckstead Scott Story Councillor Marg Zwart Absent: Julie Cashin-Oster, Gavin Crab, Also Present: Bonnie Wrightman, CBOT/ Rhonda Armour, CBOT, Carlos Salazar, Planning, Mun. of Clarington / Laura Knox, Invest Clarington / Shelly Rivers Perry Kirkbride, Orono Town Hall / Sam Kent, Farmers Market Karen Lowery called the meeting to order at 8.30 am, Inclusion Statement The Municipality of Clarington is situated within the traditional and treaty territory of the Mississaugas and Chippewas (chip-uh-WUH) of the Anishinabeg (uh-NISH-in-NAH-bek) known today as the Williams Treaties First Nations. Our work on these lands acknowledges their resilience and their longstanding contributions to the area now known as the Municipality of Clarington. 1. Declaration of Pecuniary Interest There were no disclosures of interest stated at this meeting. 2. Presentations/Delegations Perry Kirkbride reported back from Derek Boucher of employment services offering 3,000 to 5,000. Recruit potential employees. Meet once a month atthe library. Orono Town Hall Board is seeking a new member Public washrooms not for public use at Orono Town Hall citing access to other parts of the hall an issue. CBOT — Bonnie to offer support in regard to Orono. Sub Committee to discuss how they can promote Orono. What can they offer? Pop up spaces in open buildings. Main Street storefronts are for retail/commercial business and open to the public. Invest Clarington — Laura Knox. Grantfunding has not been announced. New programs coming soon. My main St. business sustainability. Community based support. Carlos Salizar also from the Municipality —Support along with Invest Clarington Municipal update— discussed 3. Previous minutes adopted 4. Old Business a. su bcommittee of Bon n ie, Lau ra, Perry, Karen, Fran k, Brad, & Carlos to meet in March to discuss how to move forward sustainably in Orono. b. Rental of empty buildings. — forwarded to Laura Knox the list of names and buildings empty— List attached. c. Seasonal Sidewalk program available —see Laura Karen to still speak with Orono Library re public washrooms and someone to come to meetings d. Bike rental program to be discussed with subcommittee e. Dog Waste stations to be discussed with subcommittee. Possibly the municipality could install posts with waste bags near garbage cans f. Orono sign install moved forward g. Heather spoke to the increased cost of BIA Apparel and feels the new price should be $60 from $55.00 for sweaters. Other items should go up as well. Brad to look into another company to manufacture. Laura looking into a local company that may be less expensive. h. Website and Arena advertising program to be discussed next time. i. Discussion of a possible space in one of the closed buildings downtown for the farmers market. j. It would be nice to have a coffee shop up and running come the season for cyclists and fortourists. k. Cross promotion of local & surrounding businesses to be discussed with the sub -committee. 5. New Business a. Subcommittee to meet in March before next meeting b. Orono Antique Festival will need help this year. Same day as a Car show at the Orono Arena. Parking solutions maybe required. c. Easter Egg Hunt— Saturday March 30t". Scott Story is organizing. d. Orono - Main Street road will not be changing hands with Durham Region soon. It is a question of repair and water mains and who will be doing that. e. We could use speed bumps, a crosswalk to increase safety for pedestrians when crossing the street. Possibly a speed tracking sign. Bank - $32,784.07 remaining in Big Box fund roughly $8400.00 in main bank account - $6000.00 levy has been deposited by the municipality.
