Subject: MUNICIPALITY OF CLARINGTON PROPOSED STREET NAME CHANGE -
"SOMMERSCALES DRIVE" TO "SOMERSCALES DRIVE"
PART LOT 12, CONCESSION 2, FORMER TOWN OF BOWMANVILLE

Recommendations:
It is respectfully recommended that the General Purpose and Administration
Committee recommend to Council the following:
1. THAT Report PD -3 -97 be received;
2. THAT By -law 86 -112, being a by -law to establish a Street Name Map and Street
Name Inventory in the Municipality of Clarington, be amended to change the
street name "Sommerscales Drive" to "Somerscales Drive" within the former Town
of Bowmanville.
3. THAT Council authorize the Mayor and Clerk to execute a by -law to amend By -law
86 -112 being a by -law to establish the Street Name Map and Street Name
Inventory in the Municipality of Clarington.
1. BACKGROUND
1.1 At its meeting of November 25, 1996 Council adopted the following Resolution:
"THAT Staff be authorized to take the appropriate action pursuant to municipal
policy and the provisions of Section 210(111) of the Municipal Act, for
consideration of the proposed street name change of "Sommerscales Drive" to
"Somerscales Drive ".
2. PUBLIC MEETING AND SUBMISSJON
2.1 Pursuant to the provisions of the Municipal Act, the proposed name change was
advertised for four (4) consecutive weeks within a local paper from December 11

to December 30, 1996 (see attached). In addition, as no houses have been
constructed on this street at this time, notice was mailed to the land developer
and the builder.
2.2 No written submissions have been received in respect of the notice, as of the
writing of this report.
3.1 At the request of Council, staff prepared a list of names which are considered to
be historically significant to the Municipality to be used for street name purposes.
Somerscales was one of the names reserved by the Municipality, in March 1989,
as being historically significant.
3.2 Unfortunately, the Regional approval of the name Somerscales for Plan of
Subdivision 18T -87087 misspelled the name as SOMMERSCALES. This went
unnoticed by both the Planning Staff and the consultant and was registered as
such. The spelling error was recently brought to the attention of Planning Staff,
at which time a report to Council (PD- 154 -96) was prepared.
4. RECOMMENDATION
4.1 In consideration of the spelling error which occurred in registering the street
name, and the fact that SOMERSCALES is the spelling which was intended and
considered to be historically significant, it is respectfully recommended that the
attached By -law be adopted to amend the street name to Somerscales Drive.

THE CORPORATION OF THE MUNICIPALITY OF CLARINGTON
BY -LAW NUMBER 97-
being a by -law to amend By -law 86 -112, a by -law to establish a Street Name Map and
Street Name Inventory in the Municipality of Clarington
WHEREAS the Council of the Corporation of the Municipality of Clarington deems it
expedient to amend the Street Map and Street Name Inventory for roads in the
Municipality of Clarington;
AND WHEREAS such Street Name Map and Street Name Inventory establishes an official
name for all improved roads and those unimproved roads with summer maintenance
only for the Municipality of Clarington;
NOW THEREFORE BE IT enacted as by -law for the Municipality of Clarington as follows:
1, Schedule "A" the Street Name Map, and Schedule "B" the Street Name Inventory,
be amended to:
a) change the name of "Sommerscales" Drive to "Somerscales" Drive.
BY -LAW read a first time this day of 1997.
BY -LAW read a second time this day of 1997.
BY -LAW read a third time and finally passed this day of 1997.
