One is at the Legion on King St E and the other went to the anonymous donor in Bowmanville, this year we hope to send at least four plaques before Remembrance Day. I hope we can count on the support of Council to help with this important project. I have attached a photo of one of the towns in Canada who has a plaque for each fallen hero. Governed by a volunteer board of directors, the Foundation has produced thousands of oak framed and metal art Memorials for display in Legions and public buildings, memorial halls, schools and private businesses to honour our pledge to remember former citizens who paid so dearly for the rights and freedoms we enjoy. During the past few years public displays were not recommended and a concerted effort began to document Canada's long history of military service and sacrifice. Individual honour rolls have been built for the towns called home before enlistment and contain the names of those who gave their lives in the service of others. Those pictured above represent the fallen airmen who called Bowmanville home before enlistment. Many combined a boyhood love of aviation with a patriotic spirit and left friends and family to serve with the Royal Canadian Air Force. They were brave. Of every 100 airmen who joined Bomber Command, 45 were killed. Many are buried overseas and most were survived by their parents. Their biographies are being researched and written this year and once commissioned, they will join their comrades on the Bowmanville honour roll. They will be preserved here for this and future generations and will forever serve as a reminder of the high price paid by families for the rights and freedoms we enjoy. The project is co-ordinated by George Seitz. Following a 27 year career with the Air Force which saw stops in Nova Scotia, Manitoba, Germany, Alberta and Saskatchewan, George is long retired and for the past few years has dedicated his time to research fallen comrades. The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy. Martin Luther King, Jr. Biographies are researched, written, placed and preserved as funds permit. A Metal art memorial is commissioned for public display on behalf of our donors. Inscribed with the donor name, the 12 x 18 inch metal art memorials are gifted to schools, Legions, memorial halls and private businesses who feel as we do - these former citizens are deserving of remembrance. Contributors to the memorial project are also provided a tax receipt in accordance with our charitable status and acknowledged IN MEMORIAM adjacent the Bowmanville honour roll as follows: Platinum Sponsor $2500.00 Gold Sponsor $1000.00 Silver Sponsor $500.00 Bronze Sponsor $250.00 Should you have any questions please feel free to call or email.
