Dear Mr. Fanning:
Subject: Memorial Park Pool - Leak in Pool
Before winterizing we did a visual check on the
liner with the water in the pool (on scuba), and I found
the liner to be in good shape. We could not check for
microscopic leaks because the water would have to be
taken out and the liner would have to be checked with
light behind the liner. The temperature was too codl to do
this, and we feel it will be very unlikely to have this
problem.
When the pool and equipment was originally installed,
the installer had problems with the solvent used to weld
the fittings. It had to be done all over again because it
was leaking very badly. I feel we have two (2) possibilities
for the leak:
1. Same solvent was used to weld fittings underground. It
is- possible that a fitting is know leaking.
2. Main drain, has no way of draining the pipe (schedule
forty pipe was used) and it should stand freezing but it
has been known to split with water in it.
So far, we have found that the leak has to be in the
main drain line. When the weather breaks, the line should be
pressurized and the leak should be located and repaired, then
a small dry well should be installed outside the decking, so
that the main drain line may be drained in the frost zone. Cost
involved, this is hard to say because we do not know where the
leak is and what is involved to repair the leak. This should
also be checked and done for the Newcastle Lions Pool.
Yours truly,
Ted Arends
