MEETING OF NOVEMBER 21, 1983
SUBJECT: "USE OF RECREATIONAL FACILITIES - HOLIDAYS"
RECOMMENDATIONS:
1. That this report be received; and
2. That Council consider opening the Newcastle Fitness Centre,
Darlington Sports Centre and Bowmanville Memorial Arena on the
following holidays and they are Friday, December 23 (half day),
Tuesday, December 27 and Friday, December 30 (half day); and
3. That Council allocate the necessary funds to the accounts in
question.
BACKGROUND & COMMENTS:
In accordance with the C.U.P.E. Collective Agreement, the following is a break-
down of the 1983 Christmas vacation schedule:
Friday, December 23, 1983 - 1/2 day off for outside workers
Saturday, December 24, 1983 - Off
Sunday, December 25, 1983 - Off
Monday, December 26, 1983 - Boxing Day - Off
Tuesday, December 27, 1983 - Off - In Lieu of Christmas Day
Wednesday, December 28, 1983 - Working Day
Thursday, December 29, 1983 - H orking Day
Friday, December 30, 1983 - 1/2 day off for outside workers
Saturday, December 31, 1983 - Off
Sunday, January 1, 1984 - Off
Monday, January 2, 1984 - Off - In lieu of New Years Day,.

Due to the 1982 Christmas vacation schedule and the controversy surrounding
it, I have been directed by Council to consider opening the facilities
during the 1983 holidays.
In attempt to satisfy th& public and in consideration of the expense
involved, I have recommended that the facilities remain open for a portion
of the holidays.
At present, respective budgets cannot accommodate the additional expense
of opening the facilities. If recommendation #2 receives Council author-
ization, then additional funds will be required.
Please find attached, a break down of expenditures for each facility.
