REPORT TO THE GENERAL PURPOSE AND ADMINISTRATION COMMITTEE
MEETING OF NOVEMBER 21, 1983.
REPORT NO.: WD -97 -83
SUBJECT: REQUEST FROM THE ORONO D.B.I.A. ASKING
COUNCIL TO CONSIDER RECONSTRUCTING SIDEWALK
ON THE WEST SIDE OF MILL STREET IN THE
DOWNTOWN AREA OF ORONO IN 1984.
RECOMMENDATION:
It is respectfully recommended:
1. That this report be received; and,
2. That a project for reconstructing the sidewalk in the
( downtown area, on the west side of Mill Street in
Orono, be included in the 1984 Budget for the
consideration of Council; and,
3. That the Orono D.B.I.A. be so advised.
Council recently considered correspondence from the Orono
D.B.I.A. requesting 1984 reconstruction of the sidewalk, on
the west side of Mill Street, in the downtown area of Orono,
and requested a report on the matter. The sidewalk in
question has been reviewed, and it was found that the
original concrete walk is overlain with an asphalt surface.

This surface is cracked, patched, and lifted in many areas,
creating not only a poor appearance, but, in many areas, a
safety problem as well. Furthermore, the uneven surface
collects small ponds of water which create a nuisance for
pedestrians during the summer and, through freezing, unsafe
conditions in winter. In a downtown area where pedestrians
abound, such conditions are undesirable, and permanent
repairs would be wise.
Repairs involved in such a project would involve removal and
replacement of both the sidewalk and roadside curb.
Anticipating further government incentive programs, this
project could be constructed by a crew not unlike the
sidewalk crew presently working for the Town under the
C.C.D.P. It is, therefore, recommended that the project be
included in the 1984 Budget for Council's consideration. A
cost estimate would be included in the budget item.

1983 was made at the Council meeting held on October 24, 1983.
Correspondence re Tourism Brochure was received and referred to the
Chief Administrative Officer for his information and consideration
when the subject Brochures are reprinted.
Correspondence re Orono Pool and Concessions was received and re-
ferred to the Director of Community Services for a review and report
in conjunction with the 1984 budget discussions.
Correspondence re Sidewalk replacement was received and referred to
the Director of Public Works for review and a report to the General
Purpose and Administration Committee.
