CS -18 -85 SUBJECT: RECOMMENDATIONS #26 AND # 27 - NEW PROGRAMMING VENTURES (Res. CSB- 2476 -85) RECOMMENDATIONS: It is respectfully recommended that the Newcastle Community Services Planning Board receive this report for information. BACKGROUND AND COMMENT: The programming staff of the Community Services Department are continually experimenting with new and innovative programs and evaluating existing programs. In preparing this report it has become apparent that a report form would be adventageous in reporting and evaluating programs. This new form will be used in future reports. Below is a summary of new programs undertaken in the past two years: 1. Indoor Water Sports Programs The department has undertaken synchronized swimming, Esso Swim (competitive Skills) swim for fitness /masters (Adults). Scuba courses have also been offered at the Fitness Centre by the Innerspace Dive Store in Oshawa when they have received sufficient request to run a course. Other possible courses that may be initiated include: waterpolo, innertube waterpolo, underwater hockey and snorekelling. Capital expenditures for equipment would be required for these programs. ../2 REPORT NO. CS -I8 -85 2. Outdoor Water Sports Programs Page 2. Activities in Orono and Newcastle Pool beyond the learn -to -swim program already offered have not been undertaken due to cold pool temperatures and unpredictable weather; in fact, it is questionable whether there is a need for an outdoor program at Necastle since registrations have been consistently low and many people are bringing their children into the warmer indoor pool. A windsurfing course was offered at Darlington Park last summer mainly for staff but some public showed interest and did participate. Other possible activities include: canoeing, sailing and windsurfing. These programs could be set up in co- operation with the park and marinas where facilities and equipment are available. 3. Children's Programs "March Break Bonanza" program has run very successfully for the last two years during the annual school break. This program has offered an educational trip (Maple Syrup demo), swimming, skating, movies and magic show. Participation numbers and a budget that always breaks even indicates we are filling a need here. International Youth Year activities are planned for every Wednesday this summer includes crafts, trips, bicycle rally, trip about horses, etc. There has been poor response to this program so far but this could be due to lack of publicity prior to the summer. Day camps at Tyrone and Orono are also being offered by the. YWCA this summer due to local requests. It will be interesting to see the response they received. If favourable day camps should possibly be considered at other areas in the Town He.) Bowmanville, west area (Courtice /Mitchells Corners) and Hampton /Solina area. 4. Outdoor Winter Sports Programs New cross - country ski trails are available in the Orono West area as of last winter. 5. Teen Programs No direct emphasis on programming has been aimed at teens. A High School Swim Team is being considered. 6. Senior Citizens Programs No new programs have been initiated for seniors. ../3 REPORT NO. CS -18 -85 Page 3 7. Concerts or Musical Events This has been left for others to organize. 8. Overall Improvement to Cultural Services and Programs Overall improvement to service and communication has been made by improving our brochure format and distributing it to all residents.
