REPORT TO GENERAL PURPOSE AND MEETING OF APRIL 1, 1985
ADMINISTRATION COMMITTEE
REPORT NO. CS -05 -85
SUBJECT: BOWMANVILLE MEMORIAL CEMETERY (VANDALISM)
RECOMMENDATIONS: It is respectfully recommended that the General Purpose
and Administration Committee recommend to Council the
following:
1. That this report be received; and
2. That the necessary repairs be charged to Self Insurance
Losses Account 2900 -X -2 -7 to a upset limit of $1,500.
BACKGROUND & COMMENTS:
On February 27, 1985, staff discovered that a number of the tombstones in the
north west section of the Cemetery were vandalized.
Further investigation on February 28th, 1985 found that approximately fifty -two
(52) monuments were pushed over and /or damaged. At least twenty (20) are beyond
repair.
The Police were notified and visited the Cemetery on February 28th, 1985 to
record the damage. The total cost of the damage and necessary repairs to the
tombstones is $15,875.
There are thirteen (13) monuments that have to be placed back on foundations.
There is also six (6) monuments to be repaired before placement on foundations.
This work will have to be done by a Monument Firm.

The twenty -six flat soft marble stones can be placed on the ground with a sand
bed. Our staff will be able to do that.
The monuments to be errected back on their foundations will cost as follows:
17 stones at $30.00 for a total of $510.00
6 stones at $60.00 for a total of $360.00
TOTAL $870.00
There are also a few monuments with paint damage. We are not sure at this time
the actual cost, however, the cost could be a total of $630.00.
The total cost of repairs and moving stones is $1,500.00
