Caruana, Deputy Director of Community Services Jane M. Lunn, Program Director George A. Kennett, Program Director May 12, 1986 PARTICIPACTION CHALLENGE DAY -- UPDATE Since Mary's memorandum of April 21st, Joe Kennett and myself have made progress in both the promotion and mechanics of Participaction Challenge Day. Attached please find a detailed status report of the tasks required to make this event a success. Below is a short summary of our progress under the headings of Community Awareness & Promotion, Participaction Day Activities, Town Staff Involvement and Mechanics. Community Awareness & Promotion Contact has been made with t e two local papers, Rogers Cable T.V. and three local radio stations (CKAR, CH00 AND CKQT -FM). Articles have already appeared in both the Orono Times and the Newcastle Independent. Public service announcements should be appearing on Cable TV and radio stations by May 16th. Publicity shots of the Mayor accepting the Challenge as well as pictures of Council being "arrested" and "warming up" will be to local papers by May 16. Letters were sent to over eighty groups including service clubs, churches, industries, sport and community groups. We are in the process of doing follow -up calls and handing out further information and posters where appropriate. Posters and information has also been handed out to schools and public high- traffic places including post offices and grocery stores. Finally, the lobby at the Fitness Centre has been decorated to promote the event. Participaction Day Activities Special activities planned by our Department will focus on Walks Around the Block" and activities at the Fitness Centre. The walks will take place in Bowmanville, Tyrone and Newcastle and will be led by the Mayor and members of Council. At the Fitness Centre squash and swimming will be offered half -price that day. Additional swims including Pre - School and Early Bird have been set up as well as open Aqua- Fitness classes in the afternoon. The Newcastle YWCA will be offering Fitness Classes for a Buck throughout the day "upstairs at the Fitness Centre. (a PARTICIPACTION CHALLENGE DAY -- UPDATE Page 2. May 12, 1986 Local High Schools will be using the pool between 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. for a mini challenge of their own. Town Staff Involvement The Fitness Centre staff has issued a "bicycle challenge" to Hampton Office and Town Hall /Bell Building staff to see who can bike the furthest around the Town (on a stationary bicycle). The aquatic staff at the Fitness Centre have issued a challenge to the aquatic staff in Ajax, Uxbridge and Cobourg to see who can swim across Lake Ontario (2,060 lengths of the pool) in the least amount of time. Each staff member contributes to this distance. Finally, it is hoped that all Department Heads will encourage staff to wear "Fitness Apparel" to work that day to promote the event as well as to enhance participation of all staff in a physical activity that day. Mechanics Challenge Headquarters will be located in the Fitness Centre Lobby from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. on May 28th. Phone lines and numbers have been confirmed by Bell and recording sheets for registering people have been set up. Although we have 23 hours of volunteer time covered to date, we still require 41 man hours to be covered. Arrangements have been made to give progress reports to the other communities involved as well as to radio and cable TV. Actual routes and times for the Walks Around the Block have been set up. Police have been informed and pending approval by Council police will again be contacted to provide supervision of the walks. The schedule for the Fitness Centre has been established. The YWCA and schools will be handling their activities on their own. Staffing schedule for extra swims will be set up by May 23rd. Participaction Canada has organized a nation wide challenge to communities to get their citizens active for 15 minutes of that day. The Town of Newcastle has been challenged by Ajax to see who has the highest percent of active people. We, the Town of Newcastle, have accepted this challenge. How may you become involved? We are encouraging community groups to organize an activity for their members to participate in. This may be done through challenging a fellow school, service club, business, church, sports team etc.... How does it work? - Participation must be for a length of 15 minutes of activity. - Participation will be recorded on the honor system, by phoning the Fitness Centre to record the number of participants and the type of activity (phone 623 -3392 and ask for the Fitness Centre). - Our ranking is based on the percent of the Towns population who participate. - People may be recorded more than once, but the activities must be different. What can your group do? - Walk, run, bicycle, skip rope, play a team sport (such as baseball) relays, swim, play tennis, skateboard, mow the lawn, garden, wash cars etc .... The only limit is your immagination!!!! The Community Services Department will be organizing participaction programs but we are encouraging community groups to become involved to maximize our score. ../2 - 2 - Last year Ajax had 10,600 participants (33 %). Let's see if we can beat that 33% score!!! Promotional material from Participaction is available to you if you become involved. Please call Joe Kennett at 623 -3379 to indicate whether or not you'll be participating. Thank you for supporting this Community event.
