By -Law # MEETING: General Purpose and Administration Committee DATE` MARCH 17, 1986 REPORT SIB,JECT: CROWN LIFE PARTICIPACTION CHALLENGE RECOMMENDATIONS: It is respectfully recommended that the General Purpose and Administration Committee recommend to Council the following: - 1. That Report CS -20 -86 be received; and 2. That the format for the Participaction Challenge be approved as outlined in this report. BACKGROUND AND COMMENTS: At the Council meeting of March 10, Council recommended to accept the Participaction challenge issued by the Town of Ajax. The Community Services Department will organize the event for our municipality and establish the Newcastle Fitness Centre as the project headquarters. Participants will be able to phone the results of their activities to the Fitness Centre and staff will record the results for tabulation. The criteria for the challenge states that any 15 minute physical activity that is fitness orientated qualifies. Examples of activities could include walking, jogging, cycling, swimming, baseball, squash, soccer, tennis to name but a few. ../2 (e� General Purpose and Administration Committee Report No. CS -20 -86 Page 2. Department staff will attempt to involve all age groups within the municipality, with particular influence on industry, service groups, sports groups, senior citizens, civic leaders as well as the population at large. Our primary responsibility as staff will be to market the activities ie. advertising events, and promoting involvement. It is also anticipated that staff will organize a single "special event" involving Council members as well as community members. A more detailed report will follow at a later date.
