SIB,JECT: CROWN LIFE PARTICIPACTION CHALLENGE
RECOMMENDATIONS:
It is respectfully recommended that the General Purpose and Administration Committee
recommend to Council the following: -
1. That Report CS -20 -86 be received; and
2. That the format for the Participaction Challenge be approved as outlined
in this report.
BACKGROUND AND COMMENTS:
At the Council meeting of March 10, Council recommended to accept the Participaction
challenge issued by the Town of Ajax.
The Community Services Department will organize the event for our municipality and
establish the Newcastle Fitness Centre as the project headquarters. Participants will
be able to phone the results of their activities to the Fitness Centre and staff will
record the results for tabulation.
The criteria for the challenge states that any 15 minute physical activity that is
fitness orientated qualifies. Examples of activities could include walking, jogging,
cycling, swimming, baseball, squash, soccer, tennis to name but a few.

Department staff will attempt to involve all age groups within the municipality, with
particular influence on industry, service groups, sports groups, senior citizens,
civic leaders as well as the population at large.
Our primary responsibility as staff will be to market the activities ie. advertising
events, and promoting involvement. It is also anticipated that staff will organize a
single "special event" involving Council members as well as community members.
A more detailed report will follow at a later date.
Respectfully submitted,
