REPORT TO: Joseph P. Caruana, Deputy Director
FROM: Kevin Greene, Energy Auditor
DATE: December 31, 1985
SUBJECT: Energy Audit Quarterly Report
The Energy Conservation Program for the Town of Newcastle has been
operational for three and a half (3.5) months. To date, nineteen (19)
facilities (see attached) have been historically audited from the base year
of 1983 to present. The majority of those facilities have been visually
inspected, and are in the process of having their diagnostic audit
completed.
Ongoing product research and application will ensure that the most cost
effective alternatives are incorporated into our facilities. At this point
in the Energy Program it is apparent that the following products /projects
will be recommended for implementation.
a) Relamping - Changing to more efficient forms of illumination.
For example the installation of florescent fixtures to take the place of
incandescent bulbs or the use of HPS in place of mercury vapor lamps.
b) Thermal Blankets - Used for covering the whirlpool surface during
unoccupied periods. The use of such a blanket on our 25 metre outdoor
pools is also a possibility.
c) Lighting Timer Controls - These will drastically reduce the length of
time lights are on while rooms are unoccupied. An ideal application
would be the squash courts at the Fitness Centre.
d) Heat Exchange Equipment - The recovery of heat from compressors in ice
rinks. The heat saved can be used either for heating domestic water,
heating ice flooding water or for space heating.
e) Compressor Sequencing Controls - Used to reduce the kilowatt demand
charge imposed on us by the hydro utilities.
f) Weather - stripping & Caulking - Visual audits have revealed that
generally all buildings throughout the Municipality are in need of
caulking and weather - stripping. By sealing the buildings, infiltration
of air is reduced thereby saving energy as well as hindering the further
deterioration of door and window frames. Energy conservation products
will be specified for particular facilities in the diagnostic audit of
each building.
I trust this information is complete. If you have any questions, please do
not hesitate to contact me.
