3. BUSINESS ARISING FROM MINUTES
(a) Outreach
The idea of forming a sub-committee to discuss and devise a plan to
promote public education of accessibility issues, ie, public displays,
interactive activities, etc., was discussed. The focus of the sub-committee
will be very broad, addressing the entire scope of accessibility. The sub-
committee, consisting of Keith Brettell, Shea-Lea Latchford and Jennifer
Forde, will meet over the summer months to brainstorm ideas and present
their plan to the full committee at the September meeting.
4. NEW BUSINESS
(a) Committee Membership
The Committee was advised that David Kelly is no longer a member of the
Committee. As there was one additional member, the vacancy will not be
filled.
(b) Accessibility Awards
A nomination has been submitted for Kawartha Pine Ridge District School
Board, Clarington Central Secondary School Teacher Bruce Rutherford,
Learning and Lifeskills/Special Education for their partnership with local
businesses/agencies in providing students with a work placement during
their school year. Students, along with an education assistant, are
working at six sites and some students have progressed in working at their
worksite independently. Some businesses have employed these students.
The awards will be presented at the DREN Gala, June 7, 2012.
The Committee was advised that Keith Brettell has also been nominated
for his mobile tack cleaning business.

(c) Integrated Standards Training
Training with respect to the Integrated Standards has been provided by
Accessibility Experts to the Human Resources Division, the Marketing and
Communications Division and the IT Division. There is much work to be
done with respect to the standards in order for the Municipality to be in
compliance by the deadlines.
5. REGIONAL UPDATE
The last meeting of the Regional Committee was May 22, followed by the annual
Joint meeting. Allan Angus, a member of the Regional Committee, was recently
featured in an article in This Week documenting a day in his life as a visually
impaired resident.
Discussion has been ongoing about the cost of membership at the Abilities
Centre in Whitby. The Committee is attempting to get clarification of the fees and
whether there is any possibility for reduction.
The Committee heard a very educational presentation from the March of Dimes
on home modifications to accommodate accessibility requirements.
Shea-Lea Latchford expressed her appreciation to the Region of Durham for
hosting the annual joint meeting. She was very impressed with the presentations
and with the work that each of the municipal accessibility committees is doing.
6. OTHER BUSINESS
Councillor Partner advised that the General Purpose and Administration
Committee discussed the issue of accessibility at the Shoppers' Drug Mart in
Newcastle. The distance from the parking lot to the front door and the grade of
the ramp into the front door makes accessing the building very difficult for many
residents. The installation of a door leading from the parking lot would be an
asset.
Moved by Councillor Partner, seconded by Shea-Lea Latchford
THAT a letter be forwarded to Shoppers' Drug Mart head office requesting that
the design of the Shopper's Drug Mart building in Newcastle be reviewed with the
thought of installing an entrance door into the back of the building, leading from
the parking lot.
