It is respectfully recommended that Council approve forthwith
the following: -
1. That Report No. CS -32 -88 be received; and
2. Further that the Department of Community Services
apply for a Safety Program Grant through the
Ministry of Tourism and Recreation; and
3. Further, that the Department of Community Services
be allowed to proceed with the project if the Grant
is approved; and
4. Further, that the 50 percent funding from the Town
be approved through the Reserve Fund, Account
Number and that the Treasurer submit
a signed statement indicating the Town's method of
funding to the Department of Community Services.
BACKGROUND & COMMENTS:
The Ministry of Tourism and Recreation are accepting grants
for the acquisition of Hockey Goal Nets with breakaway
capabilities in order to reduce injuries caused by players p
colliding with stationary goal posts. The program is open
until January 16, 1989 and is designed to provide assistance
(in the form of 50/50 cost sharing with the applicant) to
convert arenas into safer places to play.

The Goal Nets with breakaway capabilities are designed through
the use of magnetic pins, to provide breakaway capabilities
for all age groups and levels of play. The Department of
Community Services is recommending that nets at both the
Darlington Sports Centre and the Bowmanville Recreation
Complex be replaced in order to provide a consistent and safe
environment for hockey players. The total cost to the Town
would be approximately $6,000. with equal funding coming from
the Ministry (breakdown of costs is attached).
