That report # CS -01 -88 be received; and 2. That approval be given to waive the regular swim admission fee at the Fitness Centre for participants of the Seventh Annual Heart Fitness Swim Program during the month of February. BACKGROUND & COMMENTS: The Fitness Centre has participated in this annual Heart Fitness Swim for the past four years during the month of February (Heart Month). The purpose of this swim, endorsed by the Ontario Heart and Stroke Foundation, is to encourage people to donate to a worthy cause while becoming aware of their own "Heart Fitness" by swimming. ../2 GENERAL PURPOSE & ADMINISTRATION COMMITTEE REPORT NO. CS -01 -88 PAGE 2. Interested participants pay an entry fee of which approximately 80% goes directly to the Heart and Stroke Fund. The individuals then swim for thirty minutes while someone keeps track of their distance. Their results and fee are then sent on to the Ontario Masters Swim Association and in return, participants are sent a complete set of results comparing their statistics with other participants in the appropriate age and gender category. Participants also receive a special certificate recording their personal achievement and a printed bathing cap. In the past, the admission fee to the pool has been waived on the day the participant pays the entry fee. Participation in the past has been minimal and lost revenue has only amounted to approximately $30.00. In return, we have had positive publicity through press releases offered to local papers. The event has also been used as a training tool for aquatic staff to compare their fitness levels. As a result staff is recommending that the swim admission fee at the Fitness Centre be waived for participants of this program.
