MEETING: GENERAL PURPOSE & ADMINISTRATION COMMIT= DATE: March 0, 1989 REPORT " . ^ FILE 8 SPECIAL OLYMPICS REGIONAL SWIM MEET RECOMMENDATIONS: it is respectfully recommended that the General Poclx)oe & Administration Committee recommend to Council the DulIzxviog:- I^ That Report 0o. CS-06-89 be received for information; and %. That approval be given to provide the Newcastle Fitness Centre pool at the non-prime time rate for the purpose of hosting the Special Olympics Regional Swim Meet on Sunday, May 7, 1989. BACKGROUND & several regional and provincial athletic events for the mentally and physically disabled are held annually. The Town of Newcastle is located in Region 12, an area which covers Municipalities from Oshawa east to Napanee, as well as the ooctbecu communities of Uxbridge and Lindsay. 7U| O01 GENERAL PURPOSE & ADMINISTRATION COMMITTEE REPORT NO. CS-06-89 PAGE 2. The Region 12 Special Olympics Committee has asked for pool time at the Newcastle Fitness Centre on Sunday, May 7, 1989 from 9:30 a.m. - 4 :00 p.m. to host this Region's Annual Swim Meet. Approximately twelve individuals will represent the Town of Newcastle out of 160 participants expected at this event. The local Special Olympics Committee has asked for a waiver or reduction in the pool rental fee to assist them in meeting a very limited budget. Aquatic staff from the Fitness Centre have already agreed to volunteer 20 hours of time to supervise the event. Since the non-prime rental rate would off-set any potential revenue normally received on Sundays during this time frame staff are recommending that the non-prime rate be considered for this program. Service to regular patrons of the facility will be relatively unaffected with the cancellation of a Family Swim and re-scheduling of a Public Swim. Also, the publicity surrounding the event and the opportunity for exposure of our facility to both Town residents as well as individuals attending from other communities will be very positive. Respectfully submitted, Jo ph P. Caruana, Director Department of Community Services JC: JL: sa Recommended for presentation to the Committee Lawrence 7. Chief Admir, 902 tsett rative officer
