REPORT #: CS -17 -89 FILE #:

PARTICIPACTION CHALLENGE DAY -- MAY 31, 1989
RECOMMENDATIONS:
It is respectfully recommended that the General Purpose & Administration
Committee recommend to Council the following:-
1. That Report CS -17 -89 be received;
2. That daily admission fees at the Newcastle Fitness Centre be reduced to
half -price on Wednesday, May 31, 1989 to encourage maximum participation
by Town residents; and
3. That Council endorse the program of events as outlined in Report CS- 17 -89.
1.0 BACKGROUND:
1.1 With the Mayor's Challenge and registration of our Municipality in
Participaction Challenge Day, we join Ajax, Pickering and Uxbridge to
see who will be the "Fittest Community in Durham Region ". This will be
the fourth consecutive year that Newcastle will be involved in this
annual event.

REPORT CS -17 -89 _ 2 _ May 15, 1989
1.2 There are presently 360 registered communities across Canada who will be
taking part in this years' Participaction Challenge Day. The purpose of
the event is to encourage all Canadians to do fifteen minutes of a
physical activity to publicly demonstrate their commitment to a healthy
and active lifestyle. Activities could include walking, cycling,
skateboarding, baseball, gardening and swimming to name a few examples.
Participants then register their involvement by calling the Fitness
Centre (our Challenge Headquarters) at 623 -3392. Our community's
participation numbers are then registered with the National Headquarters
at 11:00 p.m. that day to show our commitment to the event.
1.3 Last year Newcastle had 43.96% or 16,568 citizens participate in the
Participaction Challenge Day. it is staff's goal to return the title
of "Fittest Community" to Newcastle by involving more than fifty percent
of citizens in the Challenge this year. No matter what the outcome of
the Challenge it is anticipated that every citizen that participates
will be considered a "winner ".
2.0 SCHEDULE OF EVENTS:
2.1 Special events are being planned at the Fitness Centre as well as at the
Town Hall Court during the noon hour and evening events at the Bowmanville
Recreation Complex (see Schedules I, II and III for a listing of events).
Local companies, businesses, schools and community groups have also been
invited to participate by planning their own events at their various
locations.
2.2 Town staff are getting an early start on the Challenge by getting
involved in "Sneaker Day ", Friday, May 26th which is the Official
Opening of Canada's Fitweek (see Schedule IV for Staff Program of Events
during this week).
3.0 PROMOTION:
3.1 General mailings to organizations are being followed up by phone calls,
press releases, advertisements, posters and flyers. The Town's first
Annual Heritage Week is also happening during the Challenge so promotions
and events will reflect this event a el.

4.0 SUMMARY:
4.1 It is anticipated that Council will involve friends and family on
Wednesday, May 31, 1989 to show their personal commitment to wellness and
a healthy lifestyle. Phone lines will be open at the Fitness Centre from
7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. that day.
