publicly demonstrate their commitment to a healthy and active
lifestyle. Activities could include walking, cycling,
baseball, skateboarding, gardening and swimming to name a few
examples. participants then register their involvement by
calling the Newcastle Fitness Centre (our Challenge
Headquarters) at 623 -0599, 623 -0600 or 623 -0601. Our
community's participation numbers are then registered with the
National Headquarters at 11:00 p.m. that day to our commitment
to the event.
1.3 Last year Newcastle had 34.97% or 13,537 citizens participate
in the Participaction Challenge Day. It is staff's goal to
return the title of "Fittest Community" to Newcastle by
involving more than fifty percent of citizens in the Challenge
this year. No matter what the outcome of the Challenge it is
anticipated that every citizen that participates will be
considered a "winner ".
2.0 SCHEDULE OF EVENTS:
2.1 Special events are being planned at the Newcastle Fitness
Centre as well as at the Municipal Administrative Centre Court
during the noon hour and an evening event at the Bowmanville
Recreation Complex. Local businesses, companies, schools, and
community groups have also been invited to participate by
planning their own events at their various locations.
2.2 Town staff are getting an early start on the Challenge by
getting involved in "Sneaker Day ", Friday, May 25th which is
the Official Opening of Canada's Fitweek.
3.0 PROMOTION:
3.1 General mailings to organizations are being followed up by
phone calls, press releases, advertisements, posters and
flyers. The Town's second Annual Heritage Week is also
happening during the Challenge so promotions and events will
reflect this event as well.
