SUBJECT:
NINTH ANNUAL HEART FITNESS SWIM
F I # =s
Res. #
By -Law #
RECOMMENDATIONS:
It is respectfully recommended that the General Purpose &
Administration Committee recommend to Council the following: -
1. That Report No. CS -01 -90 be received;
2. That approval be given to waive the regular swim admission fee
at the Fitness Centre for participants of the Ninth Annual
Heart Fitness Swim during the month of February; and
3. That this waiver apply annually during the term of Council for
the purpose outlined above.
1.0 BACKGROUND:
1.1 The Fitness Centre has participated in the Annual Heart
Fitness Swim for the past six years during the month of
February (Heart Month). The purpose of this swim, endorsed
by the Ontario Heart and Stroke Foundation, is to encourage
people to donate to a worthy cause while becoming aware of
their own "Heart Fitness" by swimming.

REPORT NO. CS -01 -90 - 2 -
JANUARY 22, 1990
1.2 Individuals may sponsor themselves or seek pledges which go
to the Heart and Stroke Fund. The participant then swims for
thirty minutes while recording their distance. Their results
and fees are then sent to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
Depending on the amount of money received the individual will
receive a certificate as well as various swimming- related
gifts. For donations of $15.00 or more they will be given a
set of results for Ontario comparing their swimming distance
with other participants in the appropriate age and gender
category.
1.3 During the past four years, the admission fee to the pool has
been waived on the day a participant submits their entry form.
Revenue not realized by authorizing this waiver is minimal,
totalling approximately $30.00 annually. However, the
Municipality and the Fitness Centre receives positive
publicity through press releases in local papers covering the
event. The Heart Fitness Swim has also been used as a
training opportunity for our aquatic staff and our Masters
Swimming program to compare their fitness levels.
1.4 Because of its worthy cause and its continued support over the
past nine years by the Heart and Stroke Foundation, staff is
recommending that the swim admission fee at the Fitness Centre
be waived for participants of this program on an annual basis.
Respectfully submitted,
