That Report No. CS -05 -90 be received; 2. That Council donate a gift certificate from Farrow's Bait Tackle and Hunting Supplies in Bowmanville as a prize to this years Salmon Derby Event on behalf of the Town of Newcastle; 3. That staff be authorized to purchase the gift certificate in the amount of $200.00; 4. That the necessary funds be drawn from the Tourism /Economic Development Account Number 7710 - 00000 -0299; and 5. That Mr. Mike Hayakawa of Oshawa Whitby This Week be informed of Council's direction. ../2 901 REPORT CS -05 -90 - 2 - FEBRUARY 19,1990 1.0 BACKGROUND: 1.1 At the regular meeting of Council held January 15, 1990 communication was received from Mr. Mike Hayakawa, This Week Salmon Derby Co- ordinator requesting Town Council donate a prize for the Seventh Annual Oshawa- Whitby This Week Salmon Derby. Subsequently, through Resolution #C -19 -90 the request was referred to Community Services for review and report. 1.2 This Annual Salmon Derby will be held for a six -week period commencing June 23rd, 1990 and ending August 3rd, 1990. Last year, participants in the Derby increased from a few hundred to 1,600 participants. Proceeds are evenly divided between the local United Way and improvements to boat launching facilities in Bowmanville and Whitby. 1.3 Council has supported the Salmon Derby for the past three years by donating a gift of $200.00 each year. Last year's gift certificate from Farrow's Bait Tackle and Hunting Supplies in Bowmanville was well received according to Mike Hayakawa, organizer of this event. Staff are recommending this gift certificate be purchased again for donation as a prize on behalf of the Town of Newcastle. Respectfully submitted, s Jos e P.
