BACKGROUND:
1.1
On Wednesday, May 30, 1990 Participaction Challenge Day was
held across Canada. More than four million Canadians took
part in Canada's largest participactory event in a nation-
wide celebration of fitness. As Council was made aware in an
earlier report by staff (May 7, 1990), Newcastle took part in
a mini - challenge with Ajax and Pickering.

REPORT CS -21 -90 - 2 - JUNE 18, 1990
2.0 RESULTS:
2.1 There were 16,478 Newcastle residents who participated in the
Challenge which was 39% of our registered population figure
of 42,200. This percentage placed us third in the Durham
Region mini - challenge as noted below:
MUNICIPALITY PARTICIPANTS PARTICIPANT PERCENTAGE
Pickering 34,208 60.01%
Ajax 26,634 57.89%
Newcastle 16,478 39.00%
2.2 A total of 3,039 more residents participated this year in
comparison to 1989 figures of 13,439, bringing the total
percentage up from 1989 to 34.97% to 39.00 %. A goal
accomplished as advertised "Lets beat last years count -
13,439 ".
2.3 A total of 465 communities across Canada took part in the
Challenge with an average of 48.64% participation.
Provincially, Newcastle placed 58th of 83 communities
involved.
3.0 NEWCASTLE EVENTS:
3.1 A number of special events were held to encourage
participation including 'Catch the Wave' at the Fitness
Centre, Noon -hour Fit breaks at the Town Hall and an Evening
Event (Heritage & Participaction Sock Hop) at the Bowmanville
Recreation Complex.
4.0 STAFF COMMENTS:
4.1 The level of participation throughout the Municipality was
disappointing. In discussion with the municipalities who were
successful, a large amount of planning and staff time goes
into this event. Volunteers commit to planning events with
a staff person employed in Special Events Programming.

REPORT CS -21 -90 - 3 - JUNE 18, 1990
4.2 With a little more effort and cooperation, staff are confident
that Newcastle will in 1991 regain its title as the `Most Fit'
Municipality.
Respectfully submitted,
