HomeMy WebLinkAboutCS-21-90Vol TOWN OF NEWCASTLE File Res. # By -Law # MEETING: GENERAL PURPOSE AND ADMINISTRATION IATE: June 18, 1990 REPORT #: CS -21 -90 FILE #: SU&JECT: PARTICIPACTION CHALLENGE DAY REVIEW 1990 RECOMMENDATIONS: It is respectfully recommended that the General Purpose & Administration Committee recommend to Council the following: - 1. That Report No. CS -21 -90 be received; and 2. That the Mayor or her designate congratulate Pickering and Ajax for their success in the Challenge by formal presentation of a Town plaque at an upcoming Pickering & Ajax Council Meeting. 1.0 BACKGROUND: 1.1 On Wednesday, May 30, 1990 Participaction Challenge Day was held across Canada. More than four million Canadians took part in Canada's largest participactory event in a nation- wide celebration of fitness. As Council was made aware in an earlier report by staff (May 7, 1990), Newcastle took part in a mini - challenge with Ajax and Pickering. .../2 901 REPORT CS -21 -90 - 2 - JUNE 18, 1990 2.0 RESULTS: 2.1 There were 16,478 Newcastle residents who participated in the Challenge which was 39% of our registered population figure of 42,200. This percentage placed us third in the Durham Region mini - challenge as noted below: MUNICIPALITY PARTICIPANTS PARTICIPANT PERCENTAGE Pickering 34,208 60.01% Ajax 26,634 57.89% Newcastle 16,478 39.00% 2.2 A total of 3,039 more residents participated this year in comparison to 1989 figures of 13,439, bringing the total percentage up from 1989 to 34.97% to 39.00 %. A goal accomplished as advertised "Lets beat last years count - 13,439 ". 2.3 A total of 465 communities across Canada took part in the Challenge with an average of 48.64% participation. Provincially, Newcastle placed 58th of 83 communities involved. 3.0 NEWCASTLE EVENTS: 3.1 A number of special events were held to encourage participation including 'Catch the Wave' at the Fitness Centre, Noon -hour Fit breaks at the Town Hall and an Evening Event (Heritage & Participaction Sock Hop) at the Bowmanville Recreation Complex. 4.0 STAFF COMMENTS: 4.1 The level of participation throughout the Municipality was disappointing. In discussion with the municipalities who were successful, a large amount of planning and staff time goes into this event. Volunteers commit to planning events with a staff person employed in Special Events Programming. ../3 9 () 2 REPORT CS -21 -90 - 3 - JUNE 18, 1990 4.2 With a little more effort and cooperation, staff are confident that Newcastle will in 1991 regain its title as the `Most Fit' Municipality.
