MEETING: GENERAL PURPOSE AND ADMINISTRATION
DATE: JUNE 18, 1990
REPORT #: CS -22 -90 FILE #:
SJB,ECT: REFRIGERATION PLANT - NEWCASTLE MEMORIAL ARENA
RECOMMENDATIONS:
It is respectfully recommended that the General Purpose &
Administration Committee recommend to Council the following: -
1. That Report No. CS -22 -90 be received;
2. That Newcastle Arena Management Board utilize the back -up
Mycom Compressor and Lincoln Condenser at the Newcastle
Memorial Arena; and
3. That the Newcastle Arena Management Board be advised of action
taken by Council.
1.0 BACKGROUND:
1.1 The Newcastle Arena Management Board has requested the use of
the 50 horsepower, 6 Cycle Compressor and the Lincoln 50
Condenser that is presently in storage at the Parks Yard. The
compressor and condenser are from the Bowmanville Memorial
Arena and at the time of closing the equipment was in' good
operating condition subsequently staff retained this equipment
for backup purposes. Newcastle Arena presently employs the
use of two - 30 hp. Sabro compressors which have been in use
for approximately 18.years. The compressors have been used

REPORT CS -22 -90 - 2 - JUNE 18, 1990
during that term for a seven month operation commencing in
September and concluding in April.
1.2 The equipment has served the arena well but due to the
difficulty in obtaining parts for the Sabro compressor and the
lack of adequate power strength to meet load demands, it is
recommended to upgrade the equipment and prevent major down
time.
2.0 COIMNTS:
The existing equipment has been stored at the Parks Yard since
its removal in late 1988. There is no foreseen use of the
equipment since there is adequate equipment at the Bowmanville
Recreation Complex and there is no perceived need to expand
the existing ice capacity at the Darlington Sports Centre at
this time.
2.1 Our Department has been in contact with the Newcastle Arena
Management Board and CIMCO Refrigeration specialists about the
use and suitability of our equipment and have requested its
use (Attachment #1). The Board is interested in the equipment
for the Newcastle operation.
2.2 The equipment will have to be installed by August 1990 to
accommodate the upcoming ice season. The Arena Board has
offered to accept responsibility for all associated costs of
the installation.
Respectfully submitted,

Dear Mr. Horvath:
The Newcastle Arena ice-making equipment must be either replaced or
upgraded this year. Councillor Stapleton recently brought to the Board's
attention that there is a 50 Hp compressor and condensing unit from the
old Bowmanville arena in your possession and presently not being used.
I would like to request that these units be made available for use in the
Newcastle Arena.
I would appreciate -hearing from you re: the above request as soon as
possible due to the time factor involved in replacing this equipment.
