ACT' SIGN - BOWMANVILLE HIGH SCHOOL AND
NEWCASTLE FITNESS CENTRE
RECOMMENDATIONS:
It is respectfully recommended that the General Purpose &
Administration Committee recommend to Council the following:-
1. That Report No. CS -26 -90 be received;
2. That Council endorse the inclusion of the Fitness Centre and
Town's Logo on the entrance sign at Bowmanville High School;
and that the Town reciprocate by installing and maintaining
a shrub bed at the base of the sign; and
3. That Mr. J. L. Taylor, Principal of Bowmanville High School
be thanked and advised of action taken by Council.
1.0 BACKGROUND:
1.1 The Northumberland and Newcastle Board of Education is in the
process of erecting a new sign at the entrance to Bowmanville
High School on Liberty Street North.
1.2 As this entrance services both the High School and the Fitness
Centre, Mr. J. L. Taylor, Principal of the High School
approached staff requesting the Town to consider identifying
the Fitness Centre on the same sign.

1.3 After some discussion, the Board has offered to assume all
costs for the sign and its installation. In return, the
Community Services Department, with Council approval, will
prepare a landscape design for the base of the sign.
Installation and maintenance of the shrub bed will also be the
responsibility of the Community Services Department.
2.0 COM1ENTS:
2.1 The existing sign does not identify the Newcastle Fitness
Centre, and further the size and colour of the school sign
does not allow for easy recognition of the entrance. With the
influx of new residents in our community, it is imperative
that our facilities are prominently identified and recognized.
2.2 It is proposed that the portion of the sign identifying the
Town's facility incorporate six inch blue lettering on white
background. The sign will read FITNESS CENTRE and will also
display the Town Logo (Attachment #1).
